Did you know?

Herbert Lawford was a Wimbledon champion and many-times runner-up in the 1880s.

Born in London, he was later educated in Edinburgh at school and University.   He lived in retirement in Dess and is said to have been a member of Aboyne Curling Club.  We can imagine he visited Tarland for a match.   He was buried at St Thomas's Church in Aboyne in 1925.

He is featured in the "Tennis Hall of Fame"and is said to have been the first player to develop the forehand topspin stroke, allegedly using what is now called the "Western" (US Coast) racquet grip.

If you want to see what the grip feels like, extend your arm out to the forehand side holding the racquet with a "handshake" grip.   Your index finger knuckle is on the top (wide) bevel of the handle, lined up with the racquet frame.   Now twist your hand backwards and imagine hitting the ball from below with what was the "back" face of the racquet.   Extreme sport!
