Club History
Originally Bridport Lawn Tennis Club played on two grass courts, but by 1965 membership was poor and the club ceased to exist. By 1973, however the club was reformed and played on two Town Council courts at Plottingham two evenings a week plus Saturday afternoons. At the same time a ladies team was also playing and in 1976 they combined to play league tennis. In 1979 the Town Council resurfaced the courts and in 1980 they were offered to the recently re-named Bridport Tennis Club on a 30 year lease at a peppercorn rent. Steadily increasing membership meant that in 1988 two additional courts were proposed, but proved to be too expensive.
In 1993/94 the clubhouse was built and when opened in April 1994, the club had 49 adult members, 3 intermediates and 27 juniors. The two courts were resurfaced in 1997, but because the club was not affiliated to the LTA, no grants were available. The club joined the LTA in 1999 and in 2000 floodlights were installed. In 2006 courts 3 & 4 were built.
Installation of mains water in 2015 was a major breakthrough, enabling a clubhouse refurbishment including a toilet to be carried out in 2019.
Today the club has a vibrant membership of over 120 members.
