In a great start to their Sussex League summer season campaign, the ladies second team defeated Amherst 4-0 on home ground.
Blessed with bright blue skies, plenty of sunshine and a warm vibe from the village Family Fun Run, captain Mel Gurnee partnered with Gemma Bridger and Jane Hugo partnered with Alex Twiddy achieved a clean sweep of all rubbers.
Mel and Gemma played Amherst’s second pair in the first rubber and took the first set 6-4. Despite the opposing players swapping sides, our pair ran away with the second set and match, 6-1. Jane and Alex took achieved an even more convincing victory, losing just one game over two sets against Amherst’s first pair.
In the reverse rubbers, Mel and Gemma won the first set 6-4 against Amherst’s first pair, and although the opposition fought back strongly in the second set the home team took the victory 7-5. Jane and Alex had two close sets with most games going to deuce but the home team battled well to take both sets 6-4.
"It was a fun, competitive day with some great tennis played by all,” said Captain, Mel Gurnee.
