What a weekend for our wheelchair tennis players!
Twenty-six players competed across eight singles and doubles events at the Grantham National Wheelchair Tennis Series Competition. Matches were played with both a regular and Fast4 scoring system.
Girls' wheelchair tennis world number three Abbie Breakwell triumphed in the Ladies' Singles, winning all of her matches for the loss of just one game. It was a similar story in the Ladies' Doubles with partner Naomie Tarver; she lost just two games overall to take the title. Abbie will take this form into her next tournament in Arges, Romania.
The U18 events were a GTC affair with Alice Dyer, Isabel Collier and Ella Coleman gaining further tournament experience. Alice dominated the singles to head home with the winner's medal, losing just one game in her three matches. Isabel and Ella played a brilliant, close match that saw Isabel win in three sets 4-2, 4-5(6), 10-8. In the doubles final, Alice and partner Dan Pennington-Bridges proved too strong for Isabel and Ella.
In the Novice Singles final, Darren Whitlock edged a tight first-set 5-4(7) against Neil Rossiter. He wrapped up the match and the title comfortably, winning the second set 4-1.
Darren and Neil then paired up for the Novice Doubles, where they reached the final and won by a convincing 4-1, 4-0 scoreline.
Paul Singleton finished as runner-up in both the Men's Singles and the doubles with partner Ruben Harris, losing to the top seeds in both matches.
The tournament is one of nine that culminate in the National Finals at The Shrewsbury Club in November.
A BIG thank you to everyone who played, to parents, tournament referee Ashok, and the volunteers who helped contribute to a brilliant weekend!
Good luck to all players for the remainder of the series!
