Welcome to Julia Searle Tennis Coaching

Who am I?

Hello, my name is Julia.

My Tennis Journey

After taking up the sport at the age of 7, I played a lot as a junior, competing in the national championships and representing Middlesex county at all age groups. At 18, I received a full tennis scholarship to study at  university in the United States, competing in NCAA Division 1.

Twenty years on, I  still love to play and compete. In August 2024, I was part of the Great Britain over 40s team competing in the World Team Championships in Portugal. I also play regularly for Sussex County over 35s and over 40s, and represent the clubs of Steyning and Storrington in various competitions. As of August 2024, I am ranked no. 6 in singles in Great Britain in my age category.

My Coaching Journey and Philosophy

I've been a tennis coach for over 20 years and have worked at various clubs and schools in Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex. I've worked at many levels of the game, from giving 3yr olds their first ever touch of a tennis racket to working with strong juniors who have gone on to represent Great Britain and play around the world including junior Wimbledon.

My passion lies in grassroots tennis, giving both children and adults the opportunity to develop their physical skills and tennis knowledge. My philosophy is to try and get players playing the game as quickly as possible, and then coaching through a games-based approach. I love to see our juniors at Steyning start to play points within their sessions, and aim to help as many juniors as possible compete in the club championships or in external tournaments. I love to see our adults who take up the game as a beginner, or return to it after an absence of several decades in some cases, and help to grow confidence to join in club social sessions or even represent the club in adult teams.

I love coaching at Steyning Tennis Club. 2024 has been a particularly good year as I was named as the "Sussex Development Coach of the Year" and the "London and South East Development Coach of the Year" where I received my award on centre court at Eastbourne during the WTA and ATP matches. Steyning Tennis Club also received the award for "Sussex Club of the Year 2024".
