Steve Pearce

Still an active member of the club, Steve first joined SLTC in 1992.

He was on the committee over several different periods starting in 1998 and has been Chairman twice: once from 2000 to 2003 and latterly from 2017 through to 2024.

Steve will always be remembered for the determined and sometimes dogged way he steered the club though the difficult Covid years when the club was effectively shut down for many months. With membership dwindling, and finances depleted, Steve breathed life back into the club with a membership relaunch post Covid, linked to a bargain subscrption rate which was less than half the price of a year or two earlier.

By keeping the fees low for several years, while making sure that the club was a great place to play tennis, membership numbers bounced back to the point where Steve ended his tenure as Chairman, at the end of 2024, with club membership at around 500, a record. His careful stewardship also helped to get the club's finances back onto a more sound footing. With a following wind, this will help to ensure that the grounds and courts can be kept in their familiar pristine condition for many years to come.

In 2023, the club won Tennis Shropshire's prestigious 'Club of the Year' award, a fitting accolade for the many years of work done by Steve and his team.

At the Tennis Shropshire AGM in January 2025, Steve won the 'Cathie Sabin Volunteer of the Year' award, a well deserved recognition of his long service at Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club.

On top of helping to manage SLTC, Steve somehow found the time to fit in a full time job. He carved out a successful career at Severn Trent, working there for 39 years before developing a second career as a consultant.
