If you are BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE standard, the main factors to be considered are listed below.
Tennis rackets are made up of
- Frame (The entire racket
- Head (Where the Strings are)
- Neck (between head and handle)
On the majority of Junior (and some Adult) rackets you’ll see the neck as a separate piece. For longevity (particularly with full size rackets) you’ll need to look for a One-piece racket. The frame and neck are the same.
- Handle/Grip
- Butt cap (Bottom of the handle)
Children's Rackets
Finding the right racket for your child is about getting the correct length. When playing, your child should be able to hold the racket by their side, holding it at the end of its grip, with the racket reach their ankle. Here is our recommended guide to to ages/rackets. These will vary due to height and build of each child.
Age 3-4 years (Red): 19”
Age 5-7 years (Red): 21”
Age 7-8 years (Orange): 23”
Age 9-10 years (Green): 25”
Age 10+ years(Full Ball): 27”
Adult Rackets
Full sized racket (27 inches) Frame - make sure the frame is all 1 piece
Tennis Strings
Your racket will usually come pre-strung. If you play regularly the tension of the strings will either diminish, and you’ll find yourself straightening the strings, OR snap/break at some point. When this happens you’ll want it restrung. Contact Dwight directly to sort this out.
Tennis Grips/Overgrips
When your racket handle(grip) starts to look dirty and no longer allows to grip properly, you can replace permanently (Replacement Grip) OR get a temporary ‘Overgrip’.
Grip/handle
Size of grip will depend on how big your hands are, and range from grip size 2(small) to 4(big)
Racket Weight
A racket’s weight simply means the total weight of the unstrung racket. Weight effects various aspects of a player’s ability to generate power, create a variety of shots and control and ease of movement on court.
The average weight of a tennis racket has dropped significantly in the last 30 years, due to advancements in technology and the use of new materials. Tennis rackets range in weight from 226 to 369 grams. Racket weight can be split into three categories:
- Lightweight
Lightweight rackets weigh under 283 grams.
Generally, they are easier to manoeuvre but lack stability. These rackets are quite powerful as they have a stiffer frame and larger head size. This compensates for the power lost from being lighter. However, this does mean that they sacrifice control. Lightweight rackets are ideal for beginners as they are easier to manoeuvre and provide enough power so the player can get the ball over the net.
- Medium
Medium rackets weigh between 283 and 326 grams.
Medium rackets provide the best balance between power, control, and manoeuvrability. This means they are ideal for a wide range of skill levels, which is why they are the most popular tennis rackets on the market.
- Heavy
Heavy rackets weigh over 326+ grams.
Most heavy rackets will feature a smaller head size, with a more flexible frame to improve control. These rackets also reduce shocks and vibrations better, improving the stability. However, they are harder to manoeuvre.
This is why they are only recommended for advanced players who have the required strength to use the racket.
Tennis Footwear
The more time you play on court, the more sense it will make to invest in a pair of sport specific shoes. Tennis shoes have a different type of grip, foot and ankle support compared to running shoes. There are shoes for all the different surfaces the game is played on. We recommend you look at purchasing an ALL-Court non-marking shoe as they can adapt to all courts.
