WLTC Club Championships 2023

The ladies singles was a very even contest with the experienced Alexa Beazer taking on the tenacious Natalie-ann Simons in a very long match which lasted over 2 and 1/2 hours. Alexa started off very aggressively and confident and took the first set 6-1, but Natalie-ann started to find her form and became very consistent by playing high, deep rallies which resulted in her taking the second set on a tie break. The third set was decided by a close championship tie break, again involving long rallies which Natalie-ann won 10-8.

The mens singles final was won by the defending champion Kaiese Brown against the former head coach Clif Moreton by a score of 6-1 6-1. Kaiese, who the previous week had won the Jurassic Tennis singles ladder displayed his trade mark powerful forehand and good footwork to great effect.

The ladies doubles final was a very close affair with Jackie Taylor and Michaela Reid overcoming the determined challenge of Natalie-ann Simons and Jane Howard by a score of 7-6 7-5.

The mens doubles final saw WTC coach Clive Stow and his partner John Samuelson take on the experienced pairing of Steve Dorman and Mark Green. There was some very good tactical play and hard hitting displayed by both sides but Clive and John were perhaps just a little more consistent and came through 6-2 6-2.

The mixed doubles final was a repeat of last year’s encounter with John Samuelson and Jane Howard taking on Martin Bottomley and Heather Caines who were the defending champions. This time though John and Jane got their revenge and came out the winners by a score of 6-1 6-1.

The chairman, Dave Mogford paid tribute to the events organisers Louise Swinton and Martin Bottomley who presented the shields and trophies to the winners. He also thanked Carole Hedges for umpiring the ladies singles and helping to organise the event. Well done to everyone who took part and supported the finals. It was a very entertaining afternoon.
