Weekly Update!

Finals Weekend Write-up!

An amazing Finals Weekend to end what has been a fantastic tournament - hotly contested matches, fabulous tennis, sunny weather (with a slight breeze on the Sunday), and lots of spectators (we even ran out of chairs at one point).  Finals results will be on display in the Club Pavilion and hopefully on our website.

The drama began Saturday morning with an early morning phone call when Liz Lake had to pull out of her Vets Ladies Doubles and Supervets Mixed due to an unlucky knee injury late on the Friday night.  But she still managed a smile and took charge of the cake and bacon butty sales whilst hobbling on her crutches.  We wish her a very speedy recovery and expect to see her in many more finals in the future.

There were lots of 3 set matches: notably Graham Tate and Sophie Young edging out Damien Lake and Sara Worley 8-6 in the third - followed by Shelley Long and Sara Worley winning the ladies doubles 7-5 in the third against Helen Mann and Ann Nicholls.  Marathon man James Lillistone put his name on the cup for the Mens Singles, beating Hugo Westveer 6-4, 6-3 - but didn't manage to make it a treble as Damien Lake got his revenge in the Mens 35+ coming from a set down to win in 3 sets.  And then Damien and Hugo rounded off the Sunday by beating Joseph Ketteringham and James in another 3 set battle 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Graham Tate was undoubtedly on court for the longest amount of time over the whole weekend - following up his mixed doubles win on the Saturday by beating Mike Pitchers in 3 gruelling sets 7-6, 5-7, 6-3.  On the Sunday morning Graham and Mike Lake were beaten by the two Ians, Blackburn & Nicholls 6-3. 6-3.  But then Graham edged Sean Dunthorne in an epic battle on Court 3 for the Mens Plate 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 in over 3 hours (interrupted by the presentation ceremony!) and finishing at 7pm in the evening.

Georgie Cavanagh won the Under 18 boys singles in a high class match against Thomas Devaney.  Thomas then followed this up with a win in the Under 18 boys doubles with partner Toby Bland beating Ben King and Alfie Nicholls 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

The plate doubles finals took place at lunchtime on the Sunday and were all exciting to watch providing great entertainment for spectators as they munched their burgers from the BBQ and enjoyed some delicious cakes.  Sean Dunthorne and Luke Daine came through against Dave Bland & James Stacey 6-2, 7-5; Sabine Ledsham-Darter & Jane Jackson beat Caroline Crane & Julia Hawkins 6-2, 6-2 whilst Craig Witheridge & Louise Atherton-Howlett beat Rob & Harriet Newman.

Ann Nicholls maintained her steadfast grip on the ladies singles trophy beating Louise Atherton-Howlett 6-0, 6-3.  She also won the Vets Mixed Doubles with husband Ian beating Craig Witheridge and Sabine Ledsham-Darter.  In the Supervets Mens Doubles Colin Larby and Mike Pitchers kept their hands on the title beating Ray Gallagher and Phil Davey 6-3, 6-1.  Mike Pitchers also regained the Supervets Mens Singles trophy completing and winning all his four matches in the round robin event.

Thanks to all the committee for making this such a great event and to all those members who took part in the tournament - it's taken 4 months and 104 matches but we finally got there.
