CROMER LAWN TENNIS & SQUASH ASSOCIATION
AUTUMN 2017 NEWSLETTER
Squash 57
The ideal sport to play for those whose knees, hips etc are not as good as they
once were.
With winter approaching we would welcome all tennis players who want to move
indoors (It is a bouncy ball and it does come back to you!)
Depending upon numbers there are two or three internal leagues so there are
plenty of opportunities to play - again just add your name to the list.
Martin Sanville is currently the No.1 player in the club but he could be tested by
John Baker who has just taken up the sport!
If anybody wants to try the sport for the first time there are rackets and balls
behind the bar which you can borrow free of charge.

Tennis
Our Annual Club Championships were held and a finals day saw
our adult and junior winners presented with their trophies on the
same day for the first time. It was encouraging to see our juniors
competing alongside their elder peers.
Congratulations go to our winners Marcus Meadows (Men's
Singles) Sian Stoppani (Ladies Singles) Matt Jordan & Gary
Spruce (Men's Doubles) Chris Chapman & Chrissie Erickson
(Ladies Doubles) Jack Gray (Mini-Red) Matilda Cabrera Burns
(Mini-Orange) Thomas Bonnett (Mini-Green) & William Jones
(U14)
Our Norwich City League teams have
completed one of the most successful
years in the club's history we believe.
The Men's A team regained the Div 1
title without losing a single match. The
Men's B team captained by Steve
Lowe were promoted to Div 2.
Both the Ladies B and C teams also gained promotion which is
fantastic so congratulations to their respective captains Lisa
Lowe and Alison Woodrow. Well done to all those who
represented the club both here and in the North Norfolk League
Our Inclusive Tennis classes
have been thriving. In June we
held a multi-sports day that
attracted over 95 people and we
organised a special awards and
presentation day in September
to thank all those who have
participated since the beginning of 2017.

Social & Fund Raising
Our 2nd barn dance was a brilliant night with just
over 90 people attending. It was great to see so
many members joining in, dancing to the Fairgreen
Ceilidh Band. The evening raised £728.11, which
has been doubled thanks to £4£ Barclays Fund
Match. A big thank you to Chris Ericksen who
organised this for us with
Barclays.
The monthly quiz held on the last Friday of each
month, has started again and now is run by the social
committee. John Baker
will be our regular quiz
master, with different
food available. The changes have been made
following some comments regulars made. We
had 12 teams last month with Norfolk
Mountaineers winning. Why don't you come
along and test
your knowledge.

Chairman Comments
Hello all, it`s that time again when those lovely grass courts have
closed down, the sun loses it`s heat and to top it all, the nights
close in. As I stand on our balcony at the club the new grass is
up and looking very good. With my op looming, I don’t suppose I
shall get a chance to play till next year, but my aim is to get on
court on our fabulous grass first week they open.
CLT&SA has had another good year financially, membership is
up and the juniors seem to go from strength to strength .
We have had some very good support from the LTA with new
machinery to help keep our grass courts in top condition (see
“smiling Jordy”)and we stand a good chance of getting Group 2
Men`s with Norfolk having been promoted from Group 3 to Group
2 this year.
Many thanks to all our volunteers and committee for all their hard
work in 2017
Regards Nick.

Junior Tennis.
The summer of 2017 has seen some notable performances from some of our
junior prospects. Both Matilda Cabrera Burns and Jack Bradshaw were
crowned Norfolk County U8 champions which is fantastic.
Matilda had a very busy summer participating in
events across the region.
William and Sian Stoppani played at Felixstowe
and won the 14 & under Mixed Doubles title there.
It's been great to see William back competing
after breaking his ankle near to the end of the
summer school term
Our new Autumn Coaching Programme has begun in earnest with over 115
children attending weekly and have a new Strength and Conditioning Taster
class scheduled for Monday October 9th 7-7.30pm.
Anyone wishing to sign up can do so on the tennis notice board or please
speak to Andy.
Groundsman corner.
After a successful season on the grass, you have probably noticed that we
have completed our end of season renovation. The courts have been put to
bed for the winter whilst carrying out this work you may have also noticed
some shiny new equipment, this has been kindly supplied by the LTA (top
dresser, spiker and tractor mounted scarifier) which has been a massive help.
A lot of people have said why are you closing the courts as they are still in
great condition? Yes they are but it's so important to get the new grasses
established before the cold weather comes and it will mean we can open
them up earlier the following year. The LTA have informed us that we open
our courts prior to any other venue which they visit. Winter programme will
start soon with work being carried out maintaining the courts and machinery,
also winter jobs are planned for the clubhouse and grounds.

Tournaments Review
County Week this year ran really well with all the support teams of
Catering, Groundsmanship, Bar, Physio and Officials pulling together
to make it a successful and highly praised event.
Juniors was as busy as usual where overall numbers were up for the
Mini and Junior events but down for the Open adult events. The
Court Supervisors we had were excellent and 2 will be needed again
next year.
They need to be 16+ and LTA accredited. We will talk with Andy to
identify potential candidates but are also looking for an Adult to
share the load. Anyone interested please speak to either Heather or
Howard.
The Catering was so good, we are considering an evening shift 3 - 7
to keep everyone on site and help the boys get away earlier. We
would also like to extend the successful BBQ from 11am – 8pm on
Wed or Thurs subject of course to the weather.
Seniors ran very well with flexible Catering, good Groundsmanship
and Bar teams all coming together to present the 98th Open
Tournament. The Quiz Evening was also well run and well
supported.
To encourage more entries, we plan to promote the sponsored
Norfolk Open events, publicise the flexible scheduling and offer
members multi-event entry benefits. Finals will be scheduled on
Friday and Saturday to offer increased flexibility. Scheduling of
singles events which is generally in the morning and doubles
generally in the afternoon will be publicised more.
Catering Vouchers will be offered to entrants applying for 3 plus
events ie £5 and £10 for four.
We would like to encourage more Club Members to enter especially
leading up to our Centenary Tournament in 2019.

Squash
Although we finished in third place in Division Two of the Norfolk SRA Summer Leagues the season was a bit unsatisfactory as we only actually played
four matches.
At the end of the summer Alex Oliver was in 69th place in the county rankings while John Baker was 111th (Nobody understands how these rankings are
arrived at)
The new league season gets under way on October 17th with a home match against Fakenham III in Division Three.
On November 14th we are due to visit Harleston where nobody can remember playing before.
The club championships run from October 9th - 13th with Martin Guppy, seeded at No.1, well fancied to take the title for the first time.
There are plenty of opportunities for all members to enter the internal squash leagues - just add your name to the list on the notice board.
We have now got new lights, new doors and new heaters so there is no excuse not to play! Martin
