Ilfracombe Tennis Club has seen a significant increase in membership, attendance at coaching, club sessions & requests for more activities for all ages & abilities.  We are determined to meet the needs of our members & therefore should be consulting members as to some of the future developments for the club & the Bicclescombe park site...

Club Developments

Clubhouse

Our clubhouse last year, before Ilfracombe Tournament 2019, had new flooring that has been been received & has proved to be hard wearing. Over the lockdown period we also decided to completely refit the kitchen & we have purchased a big screen for tennis related use. We intend to fit the clubhouse out with some new furniture, although the clubhouse is currently only available for essential use. We hope this will change soon...

 Clubhouse Decking

One of the major projects we have been considering is creating a decked area in front of the clubhouse & two large decked spaces to the side of the clubhouse, possibly with additional access from the sides of the building, where the two large windows are located.  We are also looking at outdoor shelter options from the elements, especially in the autumn & winter.

Floodlights

Currently we have three floodlit courts, the three bottom courts. We would like to increase this to all six courts. With a necessary upgrade to the existing lighting infrastructure iminent & with developments in LED lighting & mobile device use for booking, payment & lighting provision, we need to start to look at this. We also have to consider the demand for night time tennis. Our members are a hardy bunch, tennis never spleeps, even during the harshest of winters!

Adult Activities

The WEDNESDAY club night has been restarted (was teams practice night) & starts at 6pm, running to approx. 830pm. As with the very popular MONDAY club night, there is a WhatsApp group for confirming attendance at the club nights each week. You can also use the web version of WhatsApp. If you wish to join the WhatsApp group for either night contact Rob Carr.

Our FUN doubles event planned for SAT 03OCT20 at 2pm was cancelled due to bad weather. We are planning to rearrange this event on an upcoming Saturday afternoon at the same time.  If you are interested to know more about our fun tournament, contact Ros Cooke

Junior Activities

Our junior programmes continue right through the autumn & winter & generally we plough on in the bad weather but recommend approprite clothing to keep juniors warm & dry. We actively encourage juniors to compete at other venues in the region & around the South West. Our recommended competition lists can be found below & indicates who is already entered into events from our club juniors:

Autumn/Winter Junior Tournaments

Half-Term Junior Tournaments

We also have regular club match play events on SUNDAYS, typically in the time frame of 10am to 3pm.

The new LTA age group system means that most juniors will change an age group in January 2021 & for players aged 10 & under this might also mean a change in ball colour, from red to orange, orange to green or green to yellow ball. We have a number of initiatives to assist juniors through this process & to assist new & improving juniors into their appropriate peer groups. This will likely involve some additional one-off coaching & match play sessions to aid this process.

Whirlwind & Nexus Competition & Leaderboards

These competition series occur around the clubs of Devon & Cornwall & resulted in the top 8 players on the leaderboards of each county attending a finals event at the end of a competition season. Currently events have been restarted, although events to the end of the year will be standalone events & not invlolve a leaderboard or finals event. From January 2021 a new season will run until the end of the summer when a finals event is planned to occur in each of the competition age groups (8U, 9U, 10U, 12U & 16U).
