Kettering Tennis Club is on the up, in April 2016 we took on a lease of our Northampton Road courts meaning that for the first time in our 50 year history we are able to give members access to courts free of charge when they would like them and we are delighted that this will be continuing this season. Add this to 3 weekly club nights, a full coaching programme, club tournaments, league matches, social events and the Wimbledon Ballot and we are the perfect club for new players and experienced players alike.
We are proud to offer 3 club nights a week and have multiple tournaments which have taken place for many years. Kettering has a successful competitive history with numerous East Northants titles as well as Northampton League titles.
For more than 40 years, the Club has been offering tennis players at all levels of the sport an opportunity to play the game they enjoy in a friendly atmosphere on courts located in pleasant surroundings. All our members are enthusiastic about their tennis and are pleased to welcome new members who share their enthusiasm and take pleasure from either predominantly social or competitive matches. The range of ability within the club spans those who have only just started playing tennis, and accomplished players who have won League and Tournament titles, along with a whole bunch of recreational players who enjoy regular club night tennis with a wide circle of club friends. Our club has taken on the identity of Kettering Tennis Club. It was originally founded in the late 1960s by a small group of enthusiasts who worked for the Post Office, and, for many years, played as Pengos Tennis Club. (‘Pengos’ is an acronym for Postal Engineers & Operators).
In recent years, the club has grown to a membership of more than 50 Adults and our LTA qualified club coaches run regular training and coaching classes, throughout the year, for children from the age of 4, as well as offering lessons to anybody in the Club who is keen to improve certain aspects of their play.
The Club currently has Ladies’, Men’s and Mixed teams in the local leagues and many of our members enjoy competing against teams from other local clubs, but there are also those who find that our club nights give them plenty of opportunity to play as much tennis as they wish with fellow club-members. Importantly, it is a principle of the club that all members attend club nights as regularly as they can and play a totally integrated evening’s tennis. This provides sufficient opportunity for our league players to test themselves against one another at club nights, to ensure that they can compete with other teams in the leagues, while giving less accomplished players the chance to improve their game by playing against and alongside stronger players, who are always willing to encourage and advise them on their play.
Club nights are Mondays and Wednesdays and Fridays, at the Northampton Road tennis courts. On each of the three nights, courts are available for club games from 7pm until 9pm. In addition to club play, we organise fun doubles tournaments at the beginning and the end of the season, one followed by a substantial barbecue. We also host a league presentation evening with quiz at the end of the summer season and organise an occasional visit to a professional tournament. The Club is able to obtain a number of tickets to Wimbledon, each year, and these are allocated in a draw a couple of weeks before the Tournament.
