End of Season Tournament and BBQ - September 22

A fantastic day of tennis yesterday with great food and drinks. Thanks to everyone who took part and for your donations. We had 20 players and 10 people came for the BBQ and drinks. Earlier in the week, the weather was looking rather dodgy to say the least, but it improved as the week progressed. We had a few drops of rain which stopped when Kevin set up his gazebo!

There was some fantastic tennis on show from Rocco and the 20 players did pretty well too... The final was between Amanda and Kevin and Nick and Julie. Nick and Julie just pipped it to get the bubbly. By the look on their faces, Amanda and Kevin were rather happy with the sweets!

A huge thanks to Rick and James for not only providing the meat, buns and condiments (at no cost to the club), but for also cooking it - great job Rick on the BBQ.

At the moment (happy to get some more donations), we have raised £142 for charity. Please email me if you would like to nominate a charity for us to donate this to. We will discuss it at this month's committee meeting.

Our next American Tournament will be on Sunday 8th May starting at 16:00 hrs.  Names in advance either to the secretary (slynetennissecretary@gmail.com) or by adding your name to the list in the clubhouse.  This year we have arranged some of our American tournaments for Friday evenings, some for Saturday afternoons and some for Sunday afternoons. If there are other times you would prefer one of these tournaments to be hosted, please let us know.

Opening Tournament 2022

  Our opening tournament was held this afternoon and was well supported with 14 players and 5 spectators. We were very lucky with the weather and we were still sitting outside at 17:00 hrs in shorts and T-shirts - not bad for March. There were lots of great performances for so early in the season...

After the round robin games which saw people swapping partners, we ended up with the top four playing in a final. Just 4 games as we had started on the afternoon tea and the finalists didn't want to miss out! After an entertaining 4 games, the winners were Jan and Nick who just beat Iain and Alex.

Our first American tournament of the year was on Sunday 6th March.  It was a glorious sunny day if a bit chilly out of the sun!  We had twelve entrants and some great tennis skills were on show for so early in the season...  The runners up were Eddie and Kath with Max and Jan just pipping them to the top spot.  Well done to everyone and a huge thanks to Eddie for taking on the role of prepping the food - the toasted sandwiches were great!

Xmas Tournament 2021

We managed a Xmas tournament in 2021 and it was well supported with 7 pairs turning up on a cold misty day.  The forecast had said the mist would lift leaving a lovely sunny day.  As you can see from a photo of the courts, it didn't...

After a round robin, we stopped for some cheese, mulled wine and mince pies.  The final was Eddie and Claire vs Max and Pat.  Max and Pat were unbeaten in the round robin, but after some food and mulled wine, Eddie and Claire were unbeatable and stormed to the title.

Not much action in 2020 or 2021 due to COVID, but we did have a fantastic end of season tournament and BBQ in September.  We had 16 players and 6 guests who came along to watch the tennis, drink, eat and socialise...  Maybe the free sausages for the BBQ tempted them! The tournament was won convincingly by Nick and Amanda (the older two in the picture below!).  David B and Steph were the runners up.  Thanks to Jan for organising the playing order (again) and David B for 'sorting' the BBQ with Eddie filling in while David was on court. There

was some disappointment that there was no music, maybe that will happen at the next AT...

2021 Opening Tournament

We held our opening tournament on April 17th.  Due to the DoE's funeral we swapped to a morning session.  It was well supported with 18 players.  it was the perfect morning for tennis and a bit of sunbathing.  After a few hours of tennis, we had a presentation for Mike (a long-term member and committee member who is moving to Scotland), followed by the semi finals and finals.  The winning pair was Kevin and Liza - well done to both of them.
