28th May Match Results

Week 6 brings more frustration for the 2nds with a closely fought evening, with both sides producing some great rallies. 

Week 6 Matches: 28th May

1st Team AWAY MATCH:  St Pauls Walden 1 v Kimpton 3 - Won 3-0

2nd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 2 v Welwyn 6 - Lost 1-2

3rd Team AWAY MATCH: Digswell 6 v St Pauls Walden 3 (Postponed - new date to be confirmed)

Frustrations of the season continue with a 1-2 defeat at home to Welwyn, with the rallies flowing it turned out to be another loss for the 2nds, even though another new man was brought into the team. Despite drawing on the winning skills of Tony Rossdale from a previous weeks match, and bringing in our 2017 mens doubles/singles winner, we were unable to convert into an overall success. The Welwyn 6 team left 6-7 (win for Sue and Tony), 11-2 (loss for Sue and Ian), 8-5 (loss for Tony and Ian) on the night. Welwyn Team Captain Dylis Buckley quoted the following day as saying.. "It was a very enjoyable match with good rallies. The result belies the overall match....". So with those words of encouragement we're not far from getting to our 2nd Team win of the season, after a great result away at Hertford. 

The 1st team did not disappoint with a strong Home match against Kimpton 3rds and came away strong winners with a 3-0 (26-13) result. Brining in Danny to the team has brought in another level of skill and speed around the court to bolster the team further in a tough 4A league. This keeps them strong near the top of the table in their league as the season reaches the half way mark next Monday. 

Please note the 2nds and 3rds are on their "Spare Week" so only the 1st team will be playing week 7 

19th/21st May Match Results

Week 5 brings another mixed bag of results, while the 2nds gain their first win of the year 2-1 away at Hertford, both the 1st and 3rd teams fall to tight 1-2 defeats.

1st Team AWAY MATCH:  Wheathamstead 2 v St Pauls Walden 1 - Lost 2-1

2nd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 2 v Knebworth 3 - (Postponed 30th Apr game) @ 11:30 on Saturday 19th May - Lost 1-2

2nd Team AWAY MATCH: Hertford v St Pauls Walden 2 - Won 1-2

3rd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 3 v Datchworth 2 - Lost 1-2

With the introduction of Karen Bell to the 2nds team for the away match at Hertford, the steady returning hands she provided, seemed to settle the 2nds ship through their initially turbulent start to the season. In a switcharound the men stepped up first to accomodate an appoinent who was fasting for Ramadan, but soon found that they were outclassed by the skills of Uzman who was able to play both Chris and Dave around the court at will, stopping them from making any impression at the net, losing 11-2. A tight fought mixed doubles again with Uzman directing play from across the net, saw Dave and Karen put under pressure, but with a bit of team tactics, battled through to a tie-break win 7-6 (8-6). Step up Chris, and with a few words from his captain on the appoinents vunerable areas, Karen and Chris raced through some edgy duece games to a 9-0 lead, finishing 11-2 winners to round up a thoroughly deserved win away from home 20 games to 19. 

The 1st and 3rd teams had a difficult evening at home falling to 2-1 defeats, with the 1st team (Jean, Chris and Roger) going down to an 18-21 games defeat and the 3rds team (Sue Stephens, Dave Humberstone and Fergus Lyon), after a difficult mens doubles, losing 15-24 in games. 

There is always at least 1 home game on a Monday, so if you can come down and lend some support to the teams... 

14th/15th May Match Results

Mixed Results in week 4, with the 3rds taking a double win, and the 1st and 2nd teams taking a 0-3 and 1-2 defeat......

1st Team AWAY MATCH:  Wymondsley 1 v St Pauls Walden 1 - Lost 0-3

2nd Team HOME MATCH:  St Pauls Walden 2 v St Margaretsbury 3 - Lost 1-2

2nd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 2 v Knebworth 3 - L0st 1-2 (Postponed 30th April Match) 

3rd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 3 v Wheathampstead 4 - Won 2-1

3rd Team HOME MATCH: St Pauls Walden 3 v Kimpton 5 (Postponed 30th Apr game) - W0n 3-0

Despite the valiant efforts of a changed 1st team they fell to a 0-3 defeat away to Wymondsley, while the 2nds narrowly missed stealing a win at home with a (L) 6-7, (L) 5-8, (W) 10-3... After Caroline and Dave Holgate moved ahead with a 5-3 lead they were pipped to the finishline with a 6-7 defeat in the first set (5-7 tie break), Caroline and Tony Rossdale then stepped on and despite some amazing rallies and shots from our home team they were left defeated... Step on for the mens doubles, with Dave's (don't hit it to his forehand) arm booming and Tony's keen poaching at the net, they soon raced into a 5-1 lead and ended the set with a final game to make it a 10-3 win. 

Dave Humberstone's 3rd team have had a brilliant week, after a mixed start to the season, and dispite the creaking bones from Monday night, Dave stepped back in on Tuesday as a Captain to ensure a solid 3-0 win. 

Let's hope for more success as the season gets really into the swing of it (pardon the pun)...
