Junior Programme Quick-Guide
Our Junior Sessions are grouped primarily by school year or age. They are often further split by playing level, experience and apirations/commitment, depending on the size of the club and its player base.
- Youth Squads - these are for junior players who typically play once a week for fun and social benefits.
- Advanced Squads - for players who are more experienced, have committed to club membership and display an understanding and enjoyment of the wider game.
- An 'Academy' for those training and competing at a County level, with aspirations to progress further.
Coaching Team
All sessions are led by fully qualified coaches through the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). All Coaches are Accredited, ensuring that they are: DBS-checked, first aid trained and safeguarding trained. Accredited+ coaches also complete ongoing professional development (CPD).
Our coaches are all self-employed so for any questions about your tennis, please contact us centrally.
Coaches are supported by qualified Tennis Assistants, plus volunteer Tennis Leaders from our Clubs.
Player-to-Coach Ratios
We carefully manage group sizes to suit each age and level and dependent on ourt court availability. Younger players typically have smaller ratios and closer support, with larger groups for older/more experienced players. Ratios range from 1:4 to 1:12, with processes in place for first aid and safety.
Drop-off and Supervision
All players of primary school age* should be taken directly to the court at the session start-time, and collected upon completion of the session. Whilst in the session, the coaching team will supervise all children.
Primary-age children should not be unsupervised on the club premises outside of their coaching sessions.
*Parents are asked to provide consent upon registration for older children who can go home solo.
What Sessions Look Like
We adopt a modern approach to coaching in-line with the latest research and LTA guidance.
Each lesson is packed with dynamic games and skill-building activities to help improve balance, agility, coordination and more - to benefit both tennis development and wider physical literacy.
Youth Sessions include a 'body and ball' warm-up / coordination activity, a 'racket and ball' drill, and a game linked to the session content.
👉What you won’t see: Queues of players waiting turns to hit / learn a "shot" or "stroke" all session. Tennis is a fast-paced dynamic sport involving thousands of movements and decisions. Standing in line learning a shot on the spot does not prepare them for the real game.
Advanced groups also follow a simiilar 'no queues' structure, geared around developing skills in a dynamic rally-based environment.
Our Advanced group themes are:
- Term 1 - Jan-Feb Half-Term - 'Make 'em play'
- Term 2 - Feb Half-Term until Easter - 'Getting the right start'
- Term 3 - Easter until Whitsun half-term = 'Turning it around'
- Term 4 - Whitsun until the Summer Holidays - 'Get in to win'
- Term 5 - September until October half-term - 'Baseline warrior'
- Term 6 - October half-term until Christmas - 'Rule the court'
We run a Match Week in the last week of each half a term where players take part in team games and conditioned match scenarios to put their skills into action.
Term Structure
Sessions run in school terms (with an added week to the Christmas break) and include 4 weeks free each year in case sessions are rained off. Cancelled sessions are communicated via our WhatsApp Groups. Decisions are often made around 30 minutes before the session so we can have as accurate weather information as possible.
Your Child's Progress
We dont provide end of session reporting (our coaches will often be occupied with the next session). Parents are invited to ask us (via email) at any time for an update on progress along with any recommendations. Regular communications are sent via email and whatsapp promoting further playing opportunities, for which we can advise on suitability.
Equipment
We provide all equipment and pride ourselves on using high quality balls which we top up regularly. We can lend rackets to anyone who needs one, but recommend buying your own once you are playing regularly. We can provide advice on sizes, materials, brands etc, and a discount code for all equipment. Players should wear weather-appropriate sports kit, and suitable footwear.
Club Membership
This is not required for most sessions but highly recommended as you progress. Benefits include reduced coaching costs, more opportunities to play, access to club events and competitions. This is where your tennis really starts to grow, pleaase let us know if you join your club so that we can reduce your coaching fees!
Competitions
There are competitions throughout the year, including internal members-only events and open LTA tournaments. Please see our Competition pages and ask for guidance on suitability. Opportunities are sent to members regularly via email and WhatsApp.
