We’re proud to announce the launch of the Tennis Squad Academy, an exciting new step in our player development journey.
Building on our experience as an LTA 10 & Under Performance Centre and as part of the Tennis Wales 10 & Under Performance Network, the Academy marks our move into an independent performance pathway within our club programmes.
The Tennis Squad Academy is designed to support players who are training and competing at county level, with the potential to progress further. It provides a clear, long-term pathway that keeps players supported through club and county tennis at every stage.
Academy Pathway
- Ages 6–8: The focus is on inspiring a love of the game, introducing commitment, encouraging play outside a home venue, and helping children step onto the match court in a supportive environment.
- Ages 8–10: Training becomes more structured, with expectations to train outside squad sessions through private coaching, buddy hitting or practice with others. Competition becomes more formal, with LTA Grade 5 events as a minimum and a baseline expectation of around 40 matches per year.
- Ages 11–14: We believe it is essential to continue supporting players through the club and county pathway at this critical age. This includes transitioning to the yellow ball, moving into secondary school, and developing doubles skills with a view to representing club teams.
- Ages 15+: Players are supported as they transition into adult club tennis, developing doubles skills, contributing to club teams, and maintaining singles competition. This stage also supports players aiming to continue playing at university, beyond school, or explore a future in coaching.
Coaching and Delivery
We’re delighted to have Rob Gaunt leading our 10 & Under performance work. Rob has a strong track record supporting players through to regional level, including Welsh titles, and plays a key role within the county pathway. He is supported by a network of Level 3 and 4 qualified coaches across our venues, all with county pathway experience.
Sessions are delivered across our network of clubs and tailored to the specific needs of each venue.
Our Ethos and Support
The Tennis Squad Academy is an independent, self-funded pathway built on the belief that children are children first and athletes second.
We are also seeking support from local businesses to help fund tournament trips, kit, indoor court hire and specialist equipment.
