Mens match vs Cawood

Wheldrake’s courts at Fortress Broad Highway looked good and we were ready for the visit of Cawood…..or were we? Late drama was to un-fold, with Wheldrake one short of the required six. Fortunately, the veteran pro from Thorgangby was given a late call, and he responded with typical enthusiasm and commitment……..Don to the rescue!! T

Thanks and respect to Cawood who allowed us to start a little later than scheduled.

Round #1: Stephen (enjoying his break from ‘A’ level revision) and Don were to start us all off on court #1, with Don saving time by going straight in with no warm up – only the best pros can do that! Form is temporary but class is permanent!! Wheldrake’s #1 pair did well against an aggressive pair, but sadly went down 5-7 in a tight match.

Meanwhile on #2 Court, our new pairing of Phil and Paul were getting stuck into Cawood, and came out with an enthralling 6-6 to give Wheldrake their first points of the day.

Wheldrake’s Father and Son pairing on court #3 played well to earn a 10-2 victory.

Round #2, pitched Captain Murtagh and Andrew on court #1, and it was tough, especially for the spectators at the back of the court! They had a long 11th game but eventually lost it to go 4-7 down, and there was no way back from there, rats!

Stephen & Don just went down 5-7, but Phil & Paul won their crucial battle to keep Wheldrake in the tie at one point down going into the final rubbers.

Paul & Phil led the way with a fantastic half, which boosted Wheldrake’s moral, and they won the final two rubbers to take the crucial three points and leave with eight overall.

However, without Don, there would have been no victory.
