Wheldrake March On!

Wheldrake welcomed the visit of Strensall on a gloriously sunny July morning, with clear blue skies: it was hot, hot, and hot!

         Wheldrake were represented by Colin and Andrew at #1, Phil and Ben at #2, and Stephen and Don at #3. It was tough going for all players (and spectators) as the summer of 2018 continues to show startling similarity to the summer of 1976!

Colin and Andrew were slow out of the blocks, and soon found themselves 0-3, 1-4, and 4-6 behind; but they refused to lie down, with Andrew defending his unbeaten record with un-bending tenacity. They survived a match point with resilient tennis and eventually secured a well-earned half point. Andrew needed a break between matches to ‘re-focus’, whilst Colin wiped his brow!

Meanwhile Ben and Phil (both sporting matching caps) secured a key win v Strensall#3, and continued their good progress in their debut season.

Stephen and Don continued their successful partnership with a big win v Strensall#1, which was part of their very impressive three win total with just nine games conceded. Don performs most of the banter, with occasional bouts of ‘idiot’, ‘fool’ and ‘hit the damn thing’ after his own bad shots! On the technical side, Stephen’s backhand was rock solid, and Don’s trademark looped returns won the day!

Rejoice! These are dizzy heights for Wheldrake tennis!
