Weekly Update!

•    Club Tournament - First Round Matches Reminder

This is a polite reminder that all first round matches in the tournament must be played by close of play 12th August (as set out on the draw). We have only had two  match results in so far. Please ensure you email secretary@acletennisclub.org.uk with your result AND write it up on the board in the Club Pavilion (as the tournament committee are yet to develop psychic abilities).

If you have been unable to arrange your match by this date then please contact secretary@acletennisclub.org.uk and the committee will have to make the decision on who goes into the forward and backwards draws for the next rounds.
With best regards,
The Tournament Committee

•    Match Reports

Ladies C Team –

July 5th Acle C vs Cringleford B:  Laura, Lan, Helen and Beverley played this match. Cringleford put out a much stronger side than when we played them at home. Some hard fought matches, Cringleford just managed a win 34-30. Bad luck ladies, but well played.

17th July Acle C vs David Lloyd A: Away game vs "top of the league and having a laugh" and they were intent on continuing their winning ways. Lan and Beverley were the only two players available for this match and Holly and Vic thankfully stepped in to assist. A difficult task the games were tough and Acle lost 50-14. Bad luck, good experience!!

25th July Acle C vs Wymondham B: Julia and Caroline C and Beverley and Caroline D were the teams. We had beaten Wym away so were all set for a fight. Wym brought in a fairly handy player to cause a few problems. This one pair were difficult to play as each player had a completely different game, one hit the ball hard with lots of top spin and sat on the net while the other one tapped the ball back with no pace all the time. Very frustrating. The other pair were weaker but were quite handy with spinning balls down the lines. Whilst Wym seemed to think it's ok to start talking to their other pair mid game while Julia was serving led to a few exasperated words mid game. Not cricket. Caroline C got cramp badly towards the end of the first set of games and had to endure the same Wym lady standing with her hands on her hips and sighing - as if we could help it!! Slightly edgy games all the way through, Acle lost but only by 28-36. Annoying but that's the name of the game.

1st August Acle C vs Carrow Exiles: Caroline C and Lan, Helen and Beverley were the teams. The usual games against much older ladies and grass courts that don't resemble grass! Always a tricky side to play against but we have improved in dealing with these types of games. A good win for Acle, 41-23. Well done ladies.

Last game next week - three teams all on same number of points at the top of the table, Acle included. We play East Anglia E at home and this match, I think, will decide who goes up in 2nd place. Fingers crossed it will be us. Wish us well.

Mens D Team –

Our last home game of the season was against Easton college on Wednesday 1st august. Phil and James were absent so we formed two new pairs with Chris and Dave forming one pair and Colin and Ray the other. The Easton team were also down to the bare bones and their contrasting styles made it difficult to play against. Chris and Dave however adapted better, both have been ever present this year [Phil Davey has missed only this game]. They recorded 13/3 and11/5 while Colin and Ray recorded 8/8 and 9/7. My thanks to Colin for hanging in at all the right moments. Final score 41/23. So we are top on game difference, as we go off for the final game of the season at David Lloyd [who are second] and Aylsham who have one point less.  [Thanks to our E team who managed a draw on Tuesday at Aylsham]. So to sum up the situation next week I would say it definitely going right to the wire.
