Harbury B v Deddington C           

 

The scene was set on the 5th of October for the much anticipated match up of and local derby between Harbury B v Deddington C.

The Harbury team consisted of Nigel Eaton, Olly Wiltshire, Eira Owen and late call up Katy Wiltshire.

It was the mens and ladies pairing that were first off and the men had a difficult opening game which had about 15 deuces. Harbury came out the victors and took the first break. Harbury stormed to a commanding lead and took the set 6-1. The second set was slightly more even in score line with the first four games over it was 2 apiece. Harbury stepped up the tempo and with Nigel’s new serve in full swing the powered to a 6-2 victory.

The ladies pairing was a gruelling match lasting a good 20-30 minutes longer than that of the men. The Harbury ladies took a while to warm up and quickly went down by 5 games but fought back valiantly winning the next 3 games and to just miss out as Deddington took the set 3 – 6.

 

The mixed pairing had the 1’s as Nigel and Eira and 2’s as Katy and Olly. Nigel and Eira hit the ground running and looked to dispose of their opposition in fine style with a 6-1 and 6-3 win. The pairing of husband and wife duo Olly and Katy had an epic battle. Deddington took first blood by breaking serve but Harbury fought back to be in contention breaking serve to draw level, however Deddington just edged it with a 4-6 win. The second set was once again closely fought with the lead swinging back and forth between the teams. With nothing to separate them a tie break was needed to draw the set to a close. Once again Deddington just pipped Harbury to the post and one 6-7.

The match overall was a draw at 4 sets apiece. However, Harbury won 42 games opposed to 33 of Deddington which could be important come the end of the league. Currently 4th out of 6 there is still plenty to play for.
