On a perfect weather night, the RAF once again fought the Battle of Britain with the Luftwaffe on the tennis courts of Keyworth There were twelve players, in two teams, with partner’s names drawn from a hat. Three rounds of doubles tennis were played where a game won was a ‘confirmed’. At the end of play the games were added up and the result was an overwhelming will for the Luftwaffe 42 games to 10.
After the ‘battle’ the players sat down to a meal of sausages, mushy peas and delicious jacket potatoes. As the next course of peaches and ice cream was being served there was an air raid alert. Lights were extinguished and candles were lit. After the ‘all clear’ the meal finished with a loyal toast to the king.
Finally, there was a paper aeroplane distance competition with the players throwing their creations from the patio out onto No. 1 tennis court. Some flew well but others never made it to the edge of the court!
Individual results were -
Top Gun Pair - James Bell and Nicole
Tail End Charlies – Abby and Julian
