Finals Day 2025
As summer drew to a close, so too did the Club Championships on Saturday 4th October at Finals Day where this year’s worthy winners were to be decided. After several months of competitive tennis action battling through the elimination rounds, the successful finalists were primed and ready to display their tennis prowess for the accolade of becoming a Club Champion.
Mother Nature, however, had something extra to give on the day, and the strength of the combat on court was matched by the strength of the wind gusts, which made for some very challenging tennis. At times the tennis ball resembled Harry Potter’s Golden Snitch and was just as hard to predict where to make contact with it!
Despite the wind, the supporters who came down early enough to watch the well-fought Mixed Doubles match, and also the outstanding Men’s Singles, were rewarded with a couple of hours of glorious sunshine which helped take the edge off the windy chill while sat out on the veranda. As well as club members, it was great to see some relatives of the finalists come along to cheer on their family member. It was also lovely to welcome a few of our newer members to Finals Day, where they had the opportunity to meet members from other sectors of the club, as well as the experience of watching some top-notch club tennis.
The Ladies’ Doubles was a well contested match against the dominant pair. However, it was the Men’s Doubles match that had everyone on the edge of their seats in such a tight and exciting match, which ended with a Championship tie break 3rd set decider.
After the lunch break, which was fabulously catered by Dawn, the day’s play ended with a very sprightly Vets Mixed Doubles. Full credit to Catherine who was playing her 3rd final of the day (having reached 4 category finals).
Chairman Bob did a great job of ensuring the day went smoothly from start to finish, ending with the raffle draw and the presentation of well-earned trophies and certificates. The ‘Guess how many Sweeties in the Jar’ was very popular with the children who all eagerly hoped they would be the lucky winner. In the end it was one of Bob’s granddaughters who made the closest guess and was a very happy little girl!
Thanks to all who very generously donated raffle prizes, or brought along a delicious sweet treat for the refreshment table, or got involved in some way in helping with the day’s activities. Your support and efforts are much appreciated.
We should also mention that Tesco in Vimy Road kindly provided a few items for our very appealing raffle table. And we mustn't forget to thank Luke’s little girl Mia who keenly helped with the raffle tickets, and was just as keen to accept her chocolatey reward!
The 3 LTA officials that came to officiate the matches thoroughly enjoyed their day and complimented the club on the terrific club spirit amongst our members. We’re very fortunate to have such a friendly and thriving tennis club and to have members who volunteer their time to help with occasional tasks such as tidying the courts and grounds. Special thanks to Gary who gives his time so willingly to the various maintenance jobs.
Congratulations to the 2025 Club Champions, who are:
