Finals Day 2019

A Real Scorcher at Lisvane Tennis Club Finals Day 2019

The 2019 Lisvane Tennis Club Finals brought a scorching hot Saturday and some red hot tennis as the battle for the clubs various titles took place under cloudless skies.

First up was the Open Mixed Doubles Championship Final which brought together Sam Lynn and Robyn Davies to take on Will and Kate Jowett. Sam and Robyn won through 6-3 and 6-3 with some exciting shots from both partnerships.

Next up came the Mens Final where Will Jowett shook off his earlier disappointment to beat Russell De’Ath 6-0 and 6-1 whilst on the other court a crowded balcony witnessed the Piper family showdown with twin sisters Erin and Caitlin Piper playing each other in the Ladies Singles Final. Parents Julie and Will were there to see Caitlin triumph 6-4 and 6-3.

The drama continued with the Veterans Mixed Double Final bringing together the experienced and mature but definately not old partnerships of Matt Gelsomini and Caroline Jacobson against Simon Howe and Diane Davies.  Matt and Caroline took the title with a 6-1 and 6-2 victory.

The Mens Open Doubles brought together the father and son partnership of Tony and James Symons Hicks against Will Jowett (playing his third final of the day) and Raymond Tori-Cousins. A real battling performance from both partnerships brought a 6-0 7-5 victory for Will and Raymond.

Across on the neighbouring courts Simon Stokes and Mike Shipman saw off the challenge of Paul Carter and Matt Gelsomini in the Mens Veterans Doubles Final by 7-6 and 6-2 after a keenly fought battle.

Meanwhile in the Ladies Veterans Doubles Finals Lucinda and Caroline Jacobson worked hard for a 6-3 and 6-0 victory over Paula Jones and Sue Jones.

The Ladies Open Doubles Final matched the Piper twins Erin and Caitlin against Rebecca Saunders Nash and Eliza Morgan. The twins triumphing 6-2 and 6-4 to keep the Piper Trophy Cabinet fully occupied.

As the afternoon wore on it was the Consolation Competition Finals that dominated the courts with the Ladies Doubles Consolation Final being a tough fight between Kate Jowett and Julia Plaut against another family pairing of Juliette Sherrard and Holy Craddock with Kate and Julia taking the honours 6-2 and 7-5.

On the neighbouring court Mike Shipman and Tony Nash faced the youthful partnership of Greg Jones and Jack Davies with the young generation coming out on top 6-3 and 6-1.

Finally it was another family duo Russell and Alison De’ath who contested the Mixed Doubles Consolation Final against yet another family combination of Jack and Sarah Davies. A lengthy battle resulted won in the end by Russ and Alison.

It was a fantastic day with the spectators enjoying food and drink prepared by the Clubs Social Committee but the event was a real joint effort with other members helping to sweep the clay courts and of course turn up and support their fellow members as they battled for glory.

The club is always delighted to see potential new members and there are a number of social evenings where players of all abilities are welcome. Even if you haven’t played before or not played since far off school days we have Tony Symons Hicks our club coach delighted to help bring out the tennis player that lies within everyone!
