Congratulations to all the players at our Club Championships for 2024.
A huge thank you to all the members and spectators cheering on the players, Coach James the tournament organiser, Jon our resident photographer and all volunteers helping make it a very special day in our tennis calendar.
Lymington Tennis Club chose the right day for their 2024 Club Championships Finals day.
Saturday 28th September remained rain free allowing for a full day of uninterrupted tennis action in late-summer sunshine for the players and over 60 spectators.
Starting in April, the tournament saw 72 players compete throughout the summer. Mixed doubles was a real success this year with 29 pairs entering the event - which is a fantastic amount of entries even for clubs much larger than ours.
Unfortunately finals Day started with a minor hiccup with Richard Pope withdrawing due to an on-going knee problem, as a result of this the mixed doubles match between Billie Jo Taylor and Finn Tibbert-Wykvliet vs Sarah Uniacke and Richard Pope was awarded to Billie and Finn.
The first matches started at 11.30 with ladies doubles on Court 1 and mens doubles on Court 2. The mens doubles final was between Chad Durham and Finn Tibbert-Wykvliet vs Doug Brown and Robert Payne, with Chad and Finn victors 6-0 6-1, a scoreline that was not a reflection of the match.
Ladies doubles saw an intense nail-biter match between April Smith and Kate Borisova vs Pippa Da Cunha and Frances Robinson. Pippa and Frances came out on top 6-2 4-6 by taking the championship tie-break 10-7.
Next on Court 2 was the mens singles plate final between Paul Taylor and Treve Whitworth, with Paul winning 6-0 6-0, despite great effort from Treve.
In front of a packed balcony Court 1 showed the mens singles final between Chad Durham and reigning champion Finn Tibbert-Wykvliet. The match was a great display of baseline rallies with 15 year old Finn winning 6-0 6-2 to claim his second mens singles title in a row and make history becoming the first male participant to win all three titles (Mens, Doubles and Mixed) in a single year.
Next on Court 2 was Kate Borisova playing against last year's champion Sarah Uniacke in the ladies singles final. A close fought match resulted in Kate winning 6-2 6-4 to claim her first singles title at the club.
The last match to finish the days play was the ladies doubles plate final which saw Jo Hughes and Lynne Truell overcome tough opposition from Laura Braithwaite and Jane Trevorrow and win the tie-break in the second set 6-4 7-6. Keeping the audience well and truly entertained up to the last point.
To finish the day club-chair Clive Taylor and club-secretary Doug Brown presented trophies, medals and prizes to the winners and runners-up - along with raising a glass of bubbly as a show of appreciation to all our finalists, players, committee volunteers, members and spectators that really helped make a very special day at the club.
