History of the Club Champs
1922 - 1983
History of the Club and Sports Ground
EARLY DAYS. After World War I and the euphoria of peace celebrations in 1919 people began to resume their sporting interests. JP C Shrubb, the owner of the Barfield (or 'Borough Field) Cricket Ground had erected a new pavilion in 1913 but then in 1920 the family decided to sell the site for development. Fortunately, it was purchased by four public spirited men (Dr F H Maturin, E Stone, H C Heppenstall and W I Whitaker) to become Lymington Sports Ground and management was entrusted to representatives of the football, cricket, boxing and tennis clubs. So, all four sports now shared a home (football was previously played in a field where the Junior School now stands).
In 1920, a newspaper report of 14th August states 'meeting in the cricket pavilion last Monday... it was decided to start a tennis club'. There are unfortunately no official records of these early years. The Club has always been noted for being well organised and socially a very happy group and this continues to this day.
In 1935, ownership of the Ground passed to Lymington Corporation in 1935 for the purchase price of £2,285 (the same amount as was paid for the land in 1920). The present courts and pavilion were formally declared open on the 28th April 1937. The pavilion cost about £1,100 and was for the joint use of the Bowling and Tennis Clubs at an agreed rental.
In 1970 the Bowling Club took over the pavilion entirely, and the tennis club started to use a wooden shed and then small portacabin where the current clubhouse resides.
In 2013 a new two-storey club pavilion was opened, featuring central heating, disabled access and new shower facilities. The building work was funded in part with £50,000 of National Lottery's funding-for-sport scheme.
In 2019, history was made again when the club changed from a private LTD company into a committee based club. This was to safe-guard the financial future of the club, a club constitution setup, and members were voted-in forming the first committee. The committee consists of 6 members volunteering their time, each with a specialist responsibility. Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Social, Welfare and Members.
In 2023, 10 years after the new clubhouse was built, the 4 hard courts courts were resurfaced, new LED floodlights installed and fences around all courts renewed. This was funded by both club and council.
