Singles Tournament
Club Championships 2025
Morning rain resulted in a slippery surface that, added to the wind, made life pretty tricky on court. Andy Wells, in the final for the first time, took on Sally Brunner, who had been runner-up in 2024. Difficulties with their serve ‘throw-ups’ resulted in a number of service breaks, but nevertheless the standard of tennis was high. A crowd of pizza-eating, Pimm’s-drinking supporters enjoyed a tight first-set contest. Andy’s additional power and consistent length resulting in a 6-4 first set.
Given the court surface, some gutsy tennis was being played on both sides of the net with a number of excellent rallies. The conditions didn’t improve in the second set, but Andy’s strength of shot eventually proved the deciding factor despite Sally's determined efforts, with Andy taking the match 6-4 6-2.
The standard of Marnhull tennis continues to climb and this match was a fine example of the levels we are now reaching. Congratulation to both players.

Club Championships 2024
After several months of friendly competition, the Marnhull Tennis Club Finals Day took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Sally Brunner, who had already claimed a trophy in the Tombola, returned to the court to take on Tom Lee in our unique all-gender singles tournament final.
As had been expected by the seeding committee, the two best players in the club went head to head in a very high-quality singles match. Not dissimilar in style, the rallies were long and very energetic, and when they started the first set tie-break at 6/6 it was anyone’s match. Graham Howell, our long-term club tennis pro who coaches both these players, was in the crowd, but would not be drawn on who would come out on top!
The extensive tie-break was eventually won by Tom, and it was clear that the earlier tombola 3-setter and the intensity of the singles first set were beginning to take their toll, but somehow Sally found the courage to make it very difficult again for Tom. We all enjoyed a very close match of the highest quality, but eventually Tom took the crown 7/6 6/4. An excellent club day, with some excellent tennis and worthy winners!
