The different types of officials:

Court Supervisors
Being a Court Supervisor is a great way to get involved in tennis at the grassroots level. They are responsible for monitoring a number of courts at a tournament or competition. Court Supervisors help enforce the Rules of Tennis and Code of Behaviour, as well as resolving on court queries. To become a Court Supervisor you need to be over 16 and attend a three hour course.

Referees
The Referee is the expert in all things rules and regulations. Referees supervise all aspects of a tournament, from taking charge of the draws and schedules, to enforcing the rules and making sure everything runs smoothly and in the spirit of fairness.  To become a tennis Referee you must complete and pass a two-day course.

Line Umpires
Line Umpires get to call the shots – literally – at all levels of tournaments, from grassroots all the way through to the Grand Slam Tournaments. You will need to attend and pass a one day basic Line Umpire course and be over 16 years old to be able to apply.

Chair Umpires
Aside from the players, the Chair Umpire is the most important person on court during a match.  The Chair Umpire has enormous responsibility during a match and is responsible for everything from calling the score to enforcing the rules and managing the players. The best Chair Umpires work full-time in the role, travelling the world with the tennis tour.

Amazon Prime Video LTA Youth Girls
Prime Video LTA Youth Girls is designed to inspire thousands of girls to pick up a racket and try tennis for the first time. The focus is on creating an environment that motivates girls to play and stay in tennis.

Funded by the reinvestment of Prime Video’s US Open broadcast fees from Emma Raducanu's historic 2021 final - the programme focuses on creating an environment that motivates girls to enjoy and stay in tennis by giving them the chance to play with friends in a pressure free setting.

Earlier this year, Prime Video LTA Youth Girls delivered bespoke training to coaches to support their understanding of the social and environmental pressures on girls and how to introduce coaching that meets their psychological needs.

Following the success of the programme, Prime Video and the LTA are looking for more venues and coaches to inspire thousands of girls to pick up a racket.

  • Promoting the opportunity for coaches locally
  • To help grow the number of coaches and venues delivering Prime Video LTA Youth Girls we’d like your help to promote this opportunity across your network.
  • Coaches will receive an incredible package of support including performance related financial rewards, free training, and money can’t buy experiences.
  • Coaches can click here to apply to become part of Prime Video LTA Youth Girls.

Personal Development Pathway

The Personal Development Pathway (PDP) began in 2021 developing from the LTA ‘She Rallies’ programme. It is supported by Norfolk Tennis and WimX and designed for females aged 14+ years. It aims to give girls confidence and experience in developing leadership skills. Skills are developed within their own tennis venue working with their coach.

The programme is led by Donna Andrews and involves undertaking the Tennis Leaders course and helping at their venue and/or events. Progression is the Introduction to Level 1 Taster (4 hours) at 15 years old and then when 16 years old the LTA Tennis Assistant (Level1) qualification can be taken (2 full days)

The first 2 years saw 50 females starting the pathway. Several of these now have their Tennis Assistant qualification and two are currently on the Tennis Instructor (Level 2) course.

2023 – Another successful year with the first female only Assistant Coach course to be held in Norfolk. This was fully subscribed with 16 females signed up.

If you would like to know more about this excellent programme please contact Donna Andrews on 07714 474 153.

Due to the success of the girls programme thee is now a boys leadership programme – contact as above.
