Coach Spotlight - Ivan Durham

Ivan Durham, LTA Level 4 Senior

Performance Coach and Head Coach at Harling Sportspark and Heywood.

Introduction

Tennis has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember! I can still picture myself in my pushchair, watching my parents play at our local tennis club in Sussex. Those early memories sparked my passion for the game, and I was fortunate enough to represent Sussex County through the age groups. My journey eventually took me beyond the local courts, where I competed internationally in ITF future events.

But my love for tennis didn’t stop at playing. My introduction to coaching began during my time at Mark Warner Holidays in Greece. I started as a coach, sharing my enthusiasm for the sport with others. It was such a rewarding experience that I returned for a second year, this time as the tennis manager.

After returning to the UK, I found my new home in Norfolk, starting a job at Lime Tree Road alongside Derek Perry. Those four years were filled with growth and learning, allowing me to develop my coaching skills and connect with local players.

In 2007, I moved to Australia, working for the South Australian state tennis federation for 2 years. Gaining valuable international experience.

Choosing to return to the UK and sunny Norfolk! I then had the privilege of joining Nick Brown at David Lloyd Cambridge, where I was fortunate to work with some top national juniors. I particularly enjoyed my time being involved and coaching the Cambridgeshire University team.

However, like many, I faced challenges during the COVID pandemic, which led to a new chapter in my career. I am now thrilled to be the head coach at Harling Sportspark! As well as sharing my time at The Heywood in Diss.

My Club

Harling Sportspark was the vision of a few residents to provide a two-court facility for everyone to enjoy. Year after year, this vision has blossomed! We are thrilled to see the facility grow, and today, we boast over 100 members who share a passion for the sport of tennis. This is the first year we have entered an adult mixed team into the South Norfolk league. With most of the team having only picked up a racquet for the first time five years ago!

Current Junior Program

We currently have 52 juniors participating in the coaching program, playing once or more a week. This year we have red, orange and green teams competing in the LTA youth leagues. Two of our juniors have just competed in a grade 1 tournament, inspiring the other juniors in the club as to what can be achieved.

Why do I coach?

Coaching has allowed me to inspire others and share the joy of tennis, it’s a privilege to help players of all abilities and watch them grow. Just like in my childhood, I love sharing the magic of our great game.

Why do I want Harling Sportspark to be part of the Norfolk Summer Series Circuit?

As a new club, this is a wonderful chance for players and parents to learn about competition in a relaxed setting. Helping our young players build confidence and shine in familiar surroundings. Competing in and around Norfolk before potentially heading further afield.

My favourite CPD course

Back in 2019, I completed a course with Bodychek, called Moving Faster, Hitting Harder and playing Injury free. This was extremely informative and ahead of its time. I still relate to its content in my day-to-day lessons and for my own health and well-being.

Ivan is running a Mini Red (U/8) Tournament at Harling Sportspark and Heywood on Sat 14 June, starting at 2pm. Please contact Ivan via email, ivan@idtennis.co.uk if you would like to enter
