Toby, Emma and Dan all champion hard work, respect, focus and adaptability as key factors that lead to players succeeding and they try to build these elements into all players. They are building a very strong junior programme at A&BSTC and the junior teams have already won six divisions in just two league seasons, in addition to twelve players already into the Avon county squads in 2021.

Our coaches also work closely with the mens and womens teams through coaching at match practice and continue to offer a strong adult coaching offering at the club ranging from beginners all the way up to advanced players.

TOBY HUDDLESTONE - HEAD COACH - LTA Level 3 accredited+ and Spanish RPT registered professional

Toby Huddlestone joined us from Team Bath at the University of Bath in 2020 where he was performance coach on the 10U programme. Before that he was Head coach at Redland Green Club (2015-2019), establishing a very strong programme in age groups up to 12&U. In the last year he was there, Redland Green had 31 juniors in Avon county squads.

He is a passionate coach with experience of all ages and standards, from adult beginner up to regional juniors. His expertise lies in 8&U to 14&U, where he has excelled at bringing on players up through the age groups to become strong county, regional and national players.

As a player, he was Avon county men’s captain between 2016-2018 and still plays for the over 35s Avon team, and as a junior represented his home county Yorkshire and played to a high standard playing tournaments nationally. He now prefers playing in ITF masters (against his own age!, is currently ranked in the top 30 in the UK at over 40s and his favourite shot is the backhand volley.

Toby is a Level 3 accredited+ coach with all the relevant DBS, safeguarding and first aid qualifications. He was voted ‘Avon LTA County Coach of the Year 2018' and also in the same year received an LTA Next Gen coaching grant to further his professional development. In 2024 he was voted 'Performance Coach of the Year' not only in Avon but also won the South West Regional award going through to the National selection.

Toby champions hard work, respect, focus and adaptability as key factors that lead to players succeeding and so tries to build these elements into a player’s game from an early age. He is keen to develop a strong junior programme at A&BSTC and also offer adult members a varied group programme alongside private coaching.

EMMA NICHOLLS - SENIOR COACH - LTA Level 3 accredited+

Emma Nicholls is a fully qualified and accredited LTA Level 3 coach local to the area with experience of all levels of juniors and adults. She is an enthusiastic coach and a high quality player enjoying success in her junior days:

"I began playing tennis at the age of 7 years old playing short tennis. The first short tennis tournament I entered I competed against boys and girls which I ended up winning.
From there I became number 1 in Britain from the ages of 10-14, and I enjoyed a successful junior career representing Avon County, playing nationally and representing Great Britain internationally."

Emma then went on to travel solo around Europe playing in France, Belgium and Israel before injury took her out of the sport for a few years. She reignited her passion for tennis by becoming a coach and recently completed her level 3 qualification.

Emma's favourite player is Andy Murray and her favourite shot is her forehand. She loves being a tennis coach because she gets to meet lots of new people and by teaching them gets to see them really enjoy tennis!

DANIEL TONKIN - SENIOR COACH - LTA Level 3 accredited

Dan Tonkin has joined us from Biddestone Tennis club in Wiltshire where he was the lead tennis coach. He has experience of working with players of all ages, from beginners to those competing in local tournaments.

As a player Dan has enjoyed playing in the Avon men's doubles league over the summer and has represented Downend and Frenchay for over 15 years and is where he learnt to play. This includes being one of the men's captains for the last six years and this season has enjoyed playing some matches in division 1.

His favourite players are Rafael Nadal and Petra Kvitova because he believes tennis looks best when it's played left handed. His favourite shot is the forehand passing shot especially when played on the run.
