As Live Electronic Line Calling becomes more prevalent across the tours, officials are needed to support matches in alternative ways. 

The role of the match assistant has been introduced to support Chair umpires with any matters that arise on court. These include but are not limited to 

• escorting players on authorised breaks.
• prepare balls for ball change and oversee the change.
• ability to switch to line umpiring in the event of a system error.
