What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, played on a badminton-sized court with a lower net, using solid paddles and a perforated plastic ball. It's played by two or four players (singles or doubles), featuring underhand serves, rallies, and unique rules like the "kitchen" (non-volley zone), making it accessible and fun for all ages and skill levels, as it's easier on the body than tennis but still offers strategic, fast-paced play.

Key Characteristics:

  • Equipment: Solid paddles (wood or composite) and a perforated plastic ball (like a Wiffle ball).

  • Court: A badminton-sized court with a modified tennis net.

  • Gameplay: Players hit the ball back and forth, scoring points when the opponent fails to return it legally, with underhand serves and unique rules like the kitchen.

  • Accessibility: Easy to learn, low-impact, and popular with various ages and fitness levels, offering social interaction and competitive play.

  • Origins: Invented in the US in 1965 as a backyard game.

Why it's popular:

  • Easy to pick up: Beginners can start playing competitive points within minutes.

  • Social: The close proximity to partners and opponents fosters a social environment.

  • Good workout: Offers quick hand movements and reflexes, strategic thinking, and physical activity.
