100 year Centenary Celebration

The torrential rain on Saturday 9th May did not dampen the celebrations for the centenary of Brabyns Tennis Club in Marple. The club was inaugurated in1926 although tennis was played on the site well before, as shown on a map of 1896.

Attended by dignitaries and members, past captains and coaches, many memories were shared. The longest serving member Barney Robinson has been a member for 72 years and remembers gas lights being lit in the clubhouse! The youngest members are from 3 years. All showing that tennis really is a game for all ages.

MP for Hazel Grove Lisa Smart, the Mayor of Stockport Councillor Kerry Waters, Sam Foakes LTA North Head of Delivery and Cheshire LTA Jayne Grantham were all in attendance to join in the celebrations.

When the storm passed, several members, dressed up in 1920s tennis gear, played an exhibition match!

With the next 100 years in mind, new members are very welcome at Brabyns.
