HSBC Road to Wimbledon

Tennis players Rory La Trobe (14) and Lewis Mackintosh (12) from Dunfermline Tennis Club travelled to the All England Lawn Tennis Club last week to take part in both singles and doubles events of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon competition. Every year 7,000 competitors enter with only the best heading to the national finals where they compete on grass.

Both boys played fantastic tennis to make it through qualifying rounds early in the week.  In the singles main draw, they each put up a valiant effort, ultimately being beaten by the competitor who went on to win the singles title.

Unfazed by this, the boys teamed up to compete in the doubles event. After a tentative start, the boys' confidence grew with each round.  It was a proud moment for their families to see the boys compete in a final on the grass at Wimbledon.  In the final, Rory and Lewis won their first set 6-1, playing some fast-paced tennis. They lost the second set 3-6 but fought bravely in the tie break to come back from 2-6 down to 8-8.  After a couple of nervous points, the boys lost 8-10.

Rory and Lewis play in the programme at Dunfermline Tennis Club.  Club Head Coach, Alan Russell said "We're all very proud of the boys' achievements. They are inspiring the next generation of young players at the club, and all the coaches!  There aren't many people who can call themselves finalists at Wimbledon".
