Club Champs 25
A full report & photos from the 2025 Club Championship Finals from Club Chair, Bev Wilson.
HTC 2025 Adult Finals Day went ahead on Sunday 7th September and we were blessed with good weather and luckily the forecast rain kept away apart from a very light drizzle that only lasted a few minutes and the Mixed Doubles match had to cope with some gusty wind.
The day was well supported and a special thanks goes to all the helpers and also Jo Speight, Anne Schmidt & Margaret Wilson for supplying some splendid cakes which were consumed with relish!
The afternoon started with a hard hitting Men’s Singles between Rory Labron & Jamie Allen and although Rory won 6-1, 6-3, the game looked a lot closer to spectators with some excellent rallies. So Rory retained his championship crown for a second year.
The second match was the Kennedy Cup in memory of Dennis Kenedy who with his wife Rene provided junior coaching when the club started up for many years. This was an exhibition match between Michael Mingos & Michael Borchart verses Peter Quilleash & Paul Marsh who were awarded the championship due to players being unavailable for Finals Day. So a gentle reminder for future years competitors, please ensure that you are available for Finals Day when entering. Thanks so much to ‘the Michaels’ for making it a close and entertaining exhibition match and it was great to see Michael Mingos on our courts again after his move to Oxford.
The next match on court was the Men’s Doubles between Rory Labron & Rod Aitken against Matthew Henson & Graham Speight. This turned out to be a classic with the pairs being evenly matched with Rod & Rory winning the first set 6-4 and Matthew & Graham fighting back to win the second set 6-2. The final set was a 10 point championship tie break with Rory & Rod winning 10-7, to win the match.
The Ladies Doubles followed on Court 1 which was between Alison Green & Nicola Gorringe against Jacky Keates & Lucinda Keates. This match also turned out to be a nail biter with Alison & Nicola winning the first set 6-3 and Jacky & Lucinda fighting back to take the second set 6-2. Again, we had a 10 point championship tiebreak as the match decider with Alison & Nicola taking it 10-7.
The final match of the day was the Mixed Doubles between Rory Labron & Anne Schmidt against Nathan Litchfield & Jane Wybron. This was well supported with Rory & Anne winning the match 6-3, 6-3 after some very close games that could have gone either way.
So Rory was the triple champion of the day, taking home the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles trophies. Congratulations Rory on your clean sweep!
Finally, a huge thanks to Margaret Wilson for organising the Club Tournament which has not been without its challenges this year. It was good to see everyone at the the finals with spectators & competitors having fun & seeing some great tennis.
