The importance of community engagement: a collaboration between Liss Tennis Club and Syn-Star

Being part of a community is important for socialisation as well as personal growth. Liss Tennis Club engages with various members of the local community, as well as teams further afield, every day. Therefore, we like to highlight when others also show that important community spirit.

Community for mental health

Being part of a community is vital for improving and maintaining mental health. Studies have found that engaging in social situations with others, including taking part in local community events, can greatly reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

After the social distancing required in 2020, people may be keener than ever to spend time with others. Too much time spent isolating may increase stress and lead to anxiety. In fact, 88% of young people felt that loneliness contributed towards poor mental health throughout that period. Therefore, now that communities are up and running again, you might want to make use of the services they have to offer. Whether you are 6 or 66, it can be good to get out of the house, even if only once a week, to spend time with others while having fun.

Community for physical health

You should also think about how your wider community can be used to improve your physical health. Taking part in sports and other forms of fitness can help you to remain at an ideal weight. Without physical activity, obesity could result in:

  • An increased risk of cancer
  • 2.5 times more likely to have high blood pressure, which could lead to heart problems, cardiac arrest, or stroke
  • 5 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes

One factor that can prevent people from engaging in physical activity can be not wanting to do so on their own. This may be due to feeling nervous, or simply not enjoying exercise in general.

A great alternative to solo workouts can be to consider playing a team sport. Liss Tennis Club loves to welcome new members from the local area. Here, you can not only get that all-important exercise, but also meet new people with similar interests. For those who live alone, this can be a great way of building up new friendships that can be continued outside the club.

Our partnership with Syn-Star

Creating community engagement via tennis does, however, come at a price. Alongside our other funding, we also have the privilege of receiving a yearly donation from local company Syn-Star.

We first heard of Syn-Star in 2017, when they supported the Club's Tennis festival. We've kept in touch since then and in 2022 Syn-Star sent a donation to support the Club's outreach programs - including the award winning I Play 30 sessions with Kingfisher Class from Liss Infants School . This year, another donation was received. This all goes towards helping to maintain a thriving club that encourages all ages and abilities to enjoy the benefits of playing here.

You might have noticed the Syn-Star logo on our banner. This is in recognition of that support, as well as to show our gratitude for their thoughtfulness of our community.
