Second Team Captains

Ladies' Second Team

HATTIE LESLIE MILLER

How long have you been a member of SLTC?  I first learned to play tennis when I was three on the courts at SLTC. I spent a lot of time playing here during my junior years, but I officially joined as a member about five years ago.

What made you join SLTC? The opportunity to play competitive tennis, along with how friendly and welcoming everyone at the club is.

What’s your favourite tournament to watch? Wimbledon — you can’t beat the grass-court season!

What’s your favourite shot to play? A down-the-line forehand. They don’t always go in, but when they do and it’s a clean winner, it’s extremely satisfying.

What's it like playing in an SLTC team? Supportive, energetic and great fun. You also come up against some really strong teams in the leagues, which makes it consistently challenging.

What's your go-to snack/drink during a match?  You’ll usually see me with a banana or some wine gums for a quick energy boost on court.

How is your team approaching this year’s competition? We’re approaching it with a positive mindset, aiming to stay competitive, support each other and hopefully have a successful season.

Ladies' Second Team:  Hattie Leslie-Miller (Captain); Kerry Bainbridge, Verity Gwilt, Jo Lai, Karen Pearce, Albina Salova

Men's Second Team

JACK PAYTON

How long have you been a member of SLTC? 12 years.

What made you join SLTC?  My dad was a member and I already loved tennis from when I played with him growing up.

What’s your favourite tournament to watch? The SLTC Club Champs tennis finals is the best tournament to watch ;)

What’s your favourite shot to play? I love a good top spin lob, but my favourite shot to attempt is the ‘behind the back shot’.

What's it like playing in an SLTC team? Representing SLTC teams is great fun, with some excellent standard of tennis on display across all our teams. More importantly, the people who represent our teams are what make the Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club the best club in the area and seeing the level of team tennis improve over the last couple of years has been brilliant! Push yourself to get into team tennis - you won’t regret it!

What's your go-to snack/drink during a match?  Haribo Tangfastics - if I remember to bring them, or anything I can find in my partner's bag when they aren’t looking!

How is your team approaching this year’s competition? The 2nd Team has amazing squad depth this year and is looking for back to back promotion, with the Premier Division division in our sights. We love a crowd so when our home fixtures are announced, please come down and support.

Men's Second Team:  Jack Payton (Captain); Will Cooper, Dylan Edwards, James Joule, Dom Neergheen, James Priestley, Seb Slater, Tom Standish
