Tough Times - 1910 - 1950

The period between 1910 and 1950 was a tough time for the club in many ways.

In 1911 the club almost closed lacking funds and a one-year waiver of ground rent had to be applied for.

At this time the club had one red ash court and two grass courts. As you can see from the photos, Cullercoats and tennis in general had little resemblance to the modern day.

In 1939 the Cullercoats Lifeboat disaster affected the club with the loss of club member Kenneth Biggar. During the second world war only the hard court was available for play as the grass courts were dug up to be used for allotments for the 'Dig For Victory' campaign. Even after the war the local authority refused to give up the allotment land until 1952.
