FINALS DAY 2023

Tristan Wynne retained his men’s singles title and Birte Hosken regained the ladies singles trophy at St Ives Tennis Club’s finals day on Sunday September 10.
In a repeat of last year’s final Tris lost the first set on a tie-break but battled back to beat Joe Harper  6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in a marathon match.
After going toe to toe for two hours 20 minutes the rivals headed off to the nearby Porthminster Beach for a cooling swim before returning to play in the doubles finals.
Tris also retained the mixed doubles title he won last year but with new partner Annette McAvoy as the pair overcame Birte Hosken and Dave Murthwaite 6-4, 6-3.
But his bid for a second successive hat-trick of titles was foiled as Harper gained partial revenge for his singles loss, partnering Matt Trevorrow to a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win over Wynne and Adrian Botterell in another lengthy clash.
Birte Hosken beat Karen Piper in straight sets to regain the ladies singles title she last won two years ago.
Birte and Annette McAvoy had also won the ladies doubles final, played before finals day, beating Karen Piper and Lou O’Driscoll 6-4, 6-1.
In another repeat of last year’s final, Bill Peters retained his men’s over-50 singles trophy. He lost the first set 6-4, took the second 6-1 and was on match point at 5-2 up in the third when opponent Simon Clifford suffered a torn calf and had to retire.
