Paul is the Head Coach at St Leonard’s & St Ives and was appointed in early 2006.

Paul began his tennis career at Devizes Tennis Club in Wiltshire, where he played as a junior from the age of 13. Although late starting to tennis, he realised quickly his passion for the game. By the age of 15, the local coach recognised Paul’s natural aptitude and personable approach and thus began Paul’s journey into tennis coaching.

Paul has over 20 years of coaching experience and has taught in America, Spain and various parts of the UK.

He is a LTA Level 4 qualified coach and has worked with county, regional and national level players. Although Paul has worked with performance based players, he finds the greatest satisfaction in helping all levels of players and ages to improve and enjoy the game to the best of their capability whilst always maintaining that Tennis should be enjoyable and fun.

Paul’s main aim for the future is to ensure that the club continues to be a friendly, welcoming and fun place to enjoy and play tennis.

What age did you start playing?

Started playing tennis at 13.

Why did you start playing?

Funnily enough it was because of cricket - I was playing for the a men's cricket team by 13. As I was by far the youngest I was always put in last to bat and there was a lot of waiting around... next to the cricket club there were tennis courts so I would take the opportunity to hit a few balls around with whoever I could find (while I was waiting).

How long have you been coaching?

I started assisting the Head Coach at Devizes Tennis Club when I was 15. I became a fully qualified coach when I was 21 and I've been doing it ever since...

How long have you been at the club?

I started coaching at St Leonards and St Ives in May 2006. Our program and and the club as a whole has changed considerably for the better.

Favourite part of tennis?

I love playing singles but now I am becoming more advanced in years (to put it politely) I find doubles suits my game better and I like the team / social aspect of doubles particularly.

Favourite shot in tennis?

Forehand, particularly down the line.

Favourite surface to play on?

My favourite is definitely Clay, I love the long rallies and you really have to work to earn every point. Grass or any faster surface I would say suits my personal game the most though.

Favourite aspect of teaching?

I honestly like it all, whether its teaching groups or individuals, young or old, beginner or advanced. It’s very rewarding seeing people improve and enjoy playing tennis.

How would you describe your teaching style?

I consider myself to be positive, encouraging and patient. Tennis should be a fun experience for everyone.

Regardless of someone's ability, for me it’s all about building a friendship and rapport and making everyone feel welcome at the club.

Interests other than tennis?

I'm a very passionate about Carp Fishing. I also enjoy snowboarding and going to the gym.
