Welwyn Club Championships

NEWSFLASH! 2024 - Free Entry

For 2024 the WTC Committee have decided to trial a new format.

  • Free entry to all the Championships - Singles and Doubles.
(Yes, if you've already paid you'll be refunded!)
  • New format to encourage all members to join in the fun:
  1. All singles and doubles matches will start with a Qualification Round Robin stage.  As at Wimbledon the top seeds will bypass this stage and proceed directly to the knockout stage.
  2. From the Round Robin Qualifier the top players/pairs in the groups also progress to the Championships knockouts.  All the other players/pairs who have played at least two Round Robin matches progress to the Championships Plate.
  3. The Round Robin matches will therefore be more competitive, more inclusive and offer everyone progress to the appropriate knockout stage.
  4. If you want to enter the doubles we'll try and find you a partner if needed.
  5. All members, regardless of age or skill, can enter the 2024 Championships knowing that it's no longer about the cost, it's no longer about mismatches, it's now simply about the tennis.  Entries now CLOSED

The Welwyn Club Championships start in May and run through to a grand finals day on Sunday, 30th June 2024, showcasing the enormously talented players we have at the club. There are men's and women's open events in singles, doubles and mixed and are open to any member. We would encourage everyone to “have a go”, join in the fun and celebrate being amongst tennis friends either by playing or spectating.

The format is an initial Round Robin stage followed by a traditional knockout competition.  Matches are best of 3 sets, tie-break to 7 at 6 games all, Championship tie-break to 10 in the 3rd set (by 2 clear points), designed to fit in a 1.5hr booking slot. Singles and doubles Open matches are organised by yourselves up to the semifinals stage. Each round matches have to be played before a deadline date that will be strictly enforced so as not to hold up further rounds.
