Club History
Woodland Lawn Tennis Club was founded on Friday 1st March, 1912 when seventeen keen tennis enthusiasts attended a meeting chaired by Mr B. H. Hill in Brown’s Café, Weston-super-Mare with the aim of starting up a new tennis club. A plot of land in Woodland Road became available for lease and the first court was open for play on 11th May, 1912. Woodland LTC had arrived.
Three years later, the club moved to its present site in Woodland Road and paid £25 a year rent! The cost of laying the new courts meant that subs had to be raised to £1.1s.0d with a 5-shilling payment for new members. The Club grew in popularity and it seemed as though its future was secure.
In 1955 Woodland faced a major dilemma when the owner of the land, Mrs Drew, decided to put the site up for auction. For a while it seemed as though the Club’s future was in doubt. However, at the last minute, founder member, Mrs J. Hayward came forward to bid at the auction. On 14th December she bought the land for £1625, leasing it to the club for £50 a year. Sadly Mrs Hayward died in 1979 but her support for the club she had helped to found continued; she offered the club the opportunity to buy the land for her original purchase price, an offer which was gratefully accepted.
The problem now facing the club was that grass courts, although lovely to play on, could only be used from May to September. In 1983 the decision was taken to convert to hard courts and update the clubhouse by adding changing rooms.
It was all change again in 2005 when the astro-courts were introduced, proving very popular with the members. As the club enyoys its centenary, it looks forward to a thriving future and any changes that might come along.
