Berkshire 8U Success at the LTA County Cup 2026

Berkshire 8U Success at the LTA County Cup

On April 25th, Berkshire’s 8U squads traveled to Gosling Tennis Centre in Hertfordshire to compete in the LTA County Cup. Facing strong opposition from Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, our teams delivered a series of disciplined and high-quality performances.

Boys’ Results

The Boys A Team finished the day as group champions. Transitioning back to the sponge ball format after recently competing in orange ball, the team demonstrated great mental composure and adaptability. Their opening match against a strong Hertfordshire side proved pivotal; the team remained composed under pressure to secure a 6-4 win, setting the tone for a clinical performance throughout the rest of the morning.

The Boys B Team secured a well-earned bronze medal. The squad recorded impressive wins against both Buckinghamshire teams and the Hertfordshire A team. While they narrowly missed out on a higher podium finish in their final match, the standard of their individual play was excellent. A special thank you is extended to Hari, who joined the squad with only 18 hours' notice to replace an injured teammate.

Girls’ Results

The Girls A Team produced an exceptionally dominant display to secure the gold medal. The squad of four showed their quality by winning the group convincingly, losing only a single match across both singles and doubles. Their success was built on a solid foundation of doubles tactics, which they executed with precision.

The Girls B Team competed in a very balanced field, where many matches were decided by the narrowest of margins. They secured draws against Hertfordshire B and Buckinghamshire A, and while they finished just outside the medal positions by 1.2%), it was a vital learning experience.

With four players eligible to represent the county in this same age group next year, the future looks very promising for Team Berkshire.

Coaching Reflections

With his Berkshire 10U Performance Lead hat on, Nigel noted that while tennis is often an individual sport, County Cup provides a valuable opportunity for players to represent their 'spiritual home'.

"We had high expectations for these teams, and we are delighted with how they handled the pressure," Nigel commented. "These results are a direct measure of the daily hard work the players are putting into their tennis and the support infrastructure helping them become accomplished athletes."

Congratulations to all the players for their sportsmanship and for representing Berkshire with such distinction. A shoutout to the parents and supporters who got the players to the event and made sure they were suitably hydrated, well fueled and motivated!
