Berkshire’s junior players demonstrated excellent teamwork and competitive spirit at the Lionel Cox Trophy last weekend, securing third-place finishes in both the girls and boys categories.
The Lionel Cox Trophy is a doubles-only event, providing a slightly different experience from the typical junior tournament circuit which often focuses on singles. For the Berkshire players, the weekend offered a valuable opportunity to compete alongside teammates in a format that rewards communication and collective effort.
The girls team performed well in the group stages, recording victories against Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, and Bedfordshire. While a loss to Hertfordshire placed them second in their group, they finished the weekend on a positive note by defeating Norfolk in the 3/4th place playoff, and with a bronze medal for the overall 9U event.
The boys team followed a similar trajectory, earning wins over Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire and a draw against Norfolk. Following a loss to Hertfordshire, they secured second place in their group. In their final playoff match, they defeated Northamptonshire to confirm third place overall.
Success in this format relied heavily on the players' ability to communicate effectively on court. Team captain, Lewis, noted that the players embraced the team environment and the specific tactical demands of doubles play. It was an encouraging weekend of tennis that allowed the players to enjoy the competitive nature of the sport within a supportive team structure.
Thank you to parent and supporters who came along and made sure the players were fuelled and motivsted on the day!
Congratulations to all the players who represented Team Berkshire Tennis.
