Berkshire 18U County Cup: Resilience and Success in Liverpool and Swansea

The 20-22 March 2026 was a busy weekend for Berkshire Tennis, with our 18U Boys and Girls teams representing the county at the LTA 18U County Cup. Competing in Liverpool and Swansea respectively, both squads demonstrated the grit, sportsmanship, and team spirit that define Berkshire tennis.

18U Boys: Fighting Spirit in Liverpool

The Berkshire Boys headed to Liverpool for a week of high-level competition against some of the country’s top-ranked players. From the initial practice sessions on slower-than-expected courts, the team adapted quickly, showing a focused and purposeful attitude from the outset.

The campaign opened against a formidable Cheshire side. Debutants Hugo and Joseph made an immediate impact, with Hugo winning 6–4, 6–1, and Joseph clinching a tense third-set match tiebreak 10–4. James, competing in his final U18 County Cup, provided a veteran’s masterclass by winning a grueling match tiebreak 10–6 to level the tie at 3–3. Despite strong doubles performances, the team narrowly missed out on the overall win.

The following days saw a tough 0–9 loss to a powerful Middlesex team and a critical final-day clash with North of Scotland. Although the boys eventually fell 6–3 in the final tie, the scorelines often belied the intensity of the matches.

Reflections from the captains, Chris and Richard:

"Both Richard and I are incredibly proud of this team. Their attitude, fairness, sportsmanship, and relentless fight stood out across the entire weekend. Despite tough results, the boys represented Berkshire with class, resilience, and genuine team spirit."

"We hope the players enjoyed the experience and take pride in how they competed. The foundations are strong, and the future looks bright for Berkshire tennis."

18U Girls: Top Teamwork in South Wales

In Swansea, the Berkshire Girls team, led by captains Ilona and Selena, faced a high-pressure weekend against Warwickshire, South Wales, and Suffolk.

The tournament began with two challenging days. The team fought hard but suffered a 3–6 loss to Warwickshire, followed by a 1–8 defeat against a strong South Wales side. Entering the final day, the stakes were clear: Berkshire needed a decisive victory against Suffolk to maintain their position in the division.

The players rose to the occasion with their best tennis of the weekend. Dominating the courts in both singles and doubles, Berkshire secured a clinical 8–1 victory. This result ensured the team finished 3rd in the group and successfully avoided relegation.

Reflections from the captains:

"The whole team showed great support for each other all weekend, especially in tough situations when it was needed the most. Led by captains Ilona and Selena, the players worked together, stayed positive, and kept going even when matches were tough."

"It was a great team effort, and the win on the final day made it even more special."

A Final Thank You

Berkshire Tennis would like to extend a huge thank you to the players for their tireless efforts on court, and to the parents whose commitment and support make these competitive weekends possible. Whether fighting through tiebreaks in Liverpool or securing a vital divisional stay in Swansea, our U18 players have represented the county with distinction.

A shout out to the players who played their last 18U age group events, you have been invaluable to the teams and we are excited to keep folowing your progress in years to come!
