Club History

Chepstow Tennis Club was formed in 1929 with three grass tennis courts and was based at St Pierre (see below) and is now the St Pierre Marriott. The club remained at St Pierre until the early sixties where a pricing dispute led the tennis players to search for a new venue to set up.

The club moved to its current location of 40 Mathern Road in the early 60’s. The Club then became part of the ‘Chepstow Athletic Club’ (see above) comprising of local sports teams including Cricket, Football, Archery, Bowls and Tennis.

Originally there were 3 red brick clay Courts built with half fencing. You can still see the original setps behind court two’s fencing. In the early 80’s the courts were resurfaced with weather absorbent Tarmac. Metal Halide floodlights were added to the courts in 1989 along with an outside storage shed. The club replaced the storage shed with a larger Cabin structure in 2011 with a new Patio being laid (see below). The Courts were then resurfaced in 2015 after 26 years use to Tiger Turf artificial grass (see below). The courts were reopened by the Mayor and were well publicised.

The Tennis Club continues to enjoy these facilities with the courts expected to last to 2030 and beyond. After celebrating 90 years of CLTC last year the club aims to develop its facilities and membership for the next century of Tennis players.
