Another great festive tournament!

The now traditional Festive Fun American Tournament took place on Sunday 8th December.

Despite battling against the high winds of Storm Darragh (and some rain!), 16 hardy players took to the courts in their best Christmas attire plus extra layers to cope with the weather. Organised by Damian Lane, the matches were hard-fought. Congratulations to Harriet and Fiona for winning their groups, and to the runners-up Nick, Lucas, Phil and Miles. The players were supported by lots of other members who joined in the off-court fun in the clubhouse - seasonal refreshments, a quick-fired quiz and games to keep everyone amused.

To end the amazing 2024 on a high, the afternoon closed with the club’s annual award ceremony. Congratulations to Alice, the reigning Ladies Singles Champion who retained her title for a third year, and to Della and Jane for taking the 2024 Ladies Doubles crown. Commiserations to Fiona who was runner-up in the singles and Fiona and Sophie, runners-up in the doubles. Watch this space for the results of the men’s and mixed categories – the weather has driven a coach and horses through the schedule for these events!

We were delighted to present the inaugural Under-19’s Boys Singles trophy to Miles and the runner-up trophy to Elliot. An under-16’s Mixed Singles is also being played for the first time, although the champion has not yet been decided. Harriet and Ivans will be playing their final when the weather allows. All the participants in the junior championships were recognised for their contribution to a great tournament.

Some special awards were presented to club players. Judged by Damian, Phil, Susie and Betsy received the awards for the most improved man, women and junior player respectively. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for these awards.

The Family of the Year was awarded to the Hickmans – Clare, Jon, Dan and Joe.  There was also a special mention for the volunteers who have kept the courts clear of leaves this autumn - the first time this has been so organised!

And finally, the club celebrated an excellent performance in the Newbury District League this summer. Three teams won their divisions, and the winning captains were presented with their trophies: Mixed A (Alice), Men's B (John on behalf of Francois) and Men's C (Rob).
