Ladies mini tournament

On Tuesday 29th August the ladies' section of the Victoria Tennis Club Street held a Mini Tournament organised by the ladies B team captain Angela Tinnion supported by the A team captain Anna Moulsdale.

Twelve members of the Club took part with their partners being drawn at random. The format of the tournament comprised 20 minute sessions started and ended by the blow of a whistle. The whistle was expertly executed by David Thorpe (husband of member Jenny Thorpe) who also manned his 'big lens' and took many action  photographs during the evening. When the 20 minutes were up and at the whistle play ceased and those in the lead were declared winners. They  remained  on their court and split and the losers moved to the left and split. This way members were constantly playing with and against different people. Each winning pair recorded 1 point against their name.

After 2 hours of play an excellent buffet, provided by the players, was enjoyed on a balmy evening on the lawn outside the newly refurbished Club hut.

Play recommenced after half an hour and those who had over indulged began to feel the effects!! Two more rounds were played before dusk and a nail-biting finish ensued. On one court the score at the whistle stood at  3-all 30-all  so one more point had to be played to decide the winners. At this precise moment the lights went out and  the very last point was played in the dark. The receivers failed to return the serve resulting in Judith Derbyshire  becoming the winner having scored the most points during the evening. Judith, a member of Victoria's A team squad, was rewarded with a bottle of wine.

A very enjoyable evening was had by all.
