Finals' Day 2015

Wellington Tennis Club brought a very successful summer season to a close with their Finals' Day on a day that produced excellent tennis as well as superb weather. This year, many new names will be engraved on the cups as well as established names of players who retained their titles.

Winners: 14U Girls: Georgina Simms, 14U Boys: Oliver Kennedy, 18U Girls: Yasmin Cannell; 18U Boys: Peter Thorne,  Ladies' Singles: Yasmin Cannell; Men’s Singles: James Cross; Mixed Doubles: Elizabeth Deem & Carl Puzey; Men’s Doubles: James Cross and Simon Cross; Ladies' Doubles: Lydia Cross & Anna Kennedy, Veterans' Doubles; Philippa Deem & Simon Cross.

Junior awards: Best  Beginner: Isabelle Bevan, Most Improved: Jonathan Thorne, Best in Junior League: Barney Crocombe, Keenest: Joel Griffiths.

The 14U junior matches were closely contended with last year's runner up Georgie Simms beating title holder Lydia Mitchell, 7-6, 6-7, 11-9. Oliver Kennedy regained his title by narrowly beating Barney Crocombe in a championship tie-break as well. Talented new member, Yasmin Cannell, won both 18U Girls' and Ladies' titles. Yasmin currently assists coach, Dan Sizer, and will be completing her Level 1 coaching certificate very soon.

Sue Rackley, Chair, explained, "I think the quality of the junior matches can be attributed to the regular competitive matches they have played in Junior leagues matches throughout the summer."

Men's Doubles finalists were both father and son partnerships with James and Simon Cross beating Charles and Henry St George in another championship tie-break. Simon Cross added his second title by partnering Philippa Deem in the Veterans' Doubles beating new members Ian Davies and Jane Tatum in an entertaining game.

Sue added, "I'm pleased so many new members entered our tournament and fellow members, family and friends turned up to support. We are lucky to have plenty of keen players to choose from for our Winter League team, too."

Although the summer tournament is over, tennis still continues during the autumn and winter with junior sessions on Saturday mornings and Tuesdays 5-7pm. Club night evenings also continue under the lights. Non members can book a court at C&C Carpets, Mantle Street.
