'A' Team triumph back to Division 1

WELLINGTON A will be playing in Division One of the West Somerset Tennis League after winning a promotion play-off against Elms A.

The play-off involved the second from bottom side in Division One and the runners-up in Division Two.

Mixed doubles was first and both teams came out firing from word go. Sue Rackley and captain Patrick Hamilton fought hard but were unlucky to be on the wrong side of a 1-6 1-6 defeat - although the match was much closer than the scoreline suggests. Meanwhile on Court 1 Liz Deem and James Cross played in blissful tandem; they had not been beaten all season, and this game was no different and their opponents were dispatched 6-1 6-1.

It was nicely poised at two points apiece going in to the final two rubbers but that increased the need to push through.  Elms men stormed to 5-2 lead over James and Patrick but in the time it took the men to play seven games it appeared the ladies match was over. Liz and Sue had powered to a 6-1 6-0 victory over their counterparts - a win so emphatic it had secured Wellington’s victory but more importantly sealed their status as play-off winners.

Elms took the first set in the men’s 4-6 but Wellington’s resolve was not weakened and came back to snatch the second set 7-6 after an epic tie breaker in which Wellington showed nerves of steel to save two match points and earn a draw.
