Road to Wimbledon County Finals

Heversham Tennis Club youngsters Harriet Glaves and Tom Casey experienced mixed fortunes in the Road to Wimbledon County Finals held at Heversham on Sunday July 16.

The prize for the winners of this popular national competition for Juniors under the age of 14 is a place in the national finals at Wimbledon in August.

In the girl’s competition, Heversham’s Harriet Glaves cruised through her semi final against Rachael Aylemore 6-0, 6-0. In the final she was up against Caitlin Almond from Maryport in a match that was destined to go the distance. Caitlin proved the most consistent in the first set and deservedly won 7-5. Harriet, however, found her best form to take the second set 6-3 and continued in the same vein to clinch the champions tie-break 10-4. She will now represent both club and county at Wimbledon next month.

In the boy’s competition, Heversham’s Tom Casey was involved in a gruelling two hour semi-final battle in the morning sunshine with Chatsworth’s Logan Cowan. He came through with immense credit to win 7-6, 6-4. In the final, he played Matthew Davidson from Penrith, who earlier had defeated Chatsworth’s Finn Logue 6-3,6-3. The opening set of the final was one of fluctuating fortunes, with first one, then the other player in the ascendancy. It was Matthew, however, who took the set 7-5 and then eased through the second set 6-1, as Tom’s tough semi-final took effect.

For Heversham Tennis Club, the tournament was a great success and it is hoped they will stage this event in future years.
